Any one considering getting a stable mirror or trailer mirror for a horse who is unhappy being on his/her own needs to get down to Lidl pronto!
This week they are selling 150 X 58cm rolls of Self adhesive Mirror Film for £2.99
I would think this would be a deal for a very cheap, super safe alternative to a custom made stable mirror ;D

if you are always ruining jodhs/jeans think about getting some full chaps.
They make your jeans/jodhs last longer and don't wear as quick, are warm in winter, cheap (just bought some brand new ones for 9.99 off ebay) and are great to keep at the yard/in car boot to pop on over good trousers/jeans if you decide to make an unplanned trip to the yard on your way/way back from somewhere in totally unsuitable clothing!

* if you have control over your own grazing / herd - worm count instead of routine worming, then you only need to pay out for wormers when they're really needed and your horse will benefit not having so many chemicals down his neck.
* make your own fly repellent, or if you can't find the ingredients / don't like the idea / have more kickass flies - buy a bulk 5L bottle instead of many little ones, works out much cheaper.
* take a really good analytical look at what you feed. I manage to keep two LARGE horses in peak condition, both clipped and working, on about £20 per month. They get unbranded fibre cubes, beet, unmolassed chopped straw, sunflower oil and multivitamins. The sunflower oil is in a 15L tin from the big Tescos! I also feed half hay:half straw - lower calorie but higher fibre.
*rubber mat your stables. Don't pay full price for mats from a horsey shop - look out for second hand ones in your local paper / yellow ads / local shops notice board, contact farm suppliers and ask about cattle matting, contact wholesalers and ask about damaged mats or factory seconds. I got six big thick mats last year for £40 total as they had minor damage and couldn't be supplied to retail shops! The chap was delighted I wanted to take them away!
* Contact arable farmers and ask about big bale straw for bedding - I used to get as much as I wanted free from a local farmer as he had more than he could get rid of and just ended up burning it.
* consider changing your bedding this winter. Shavings are getting more and more expensive, hemp and miscanthus are good and seem to be cheaper now. Shredded paper could be brought home from offices or wherever and used for bedding - it's free!
* Top brand rugs bought second hand would probably cost the same as a poorer quality bought new, but will last and perform better. I have a Fal Pro that is now on it's 8th winter and it's still one of my favourite and most reliable rugs!
* Arrange to share jobs with a friend on the yard - if you alternate mornings and do each others horses you will half your petrol costs for morning journeys.
* Clean out your car!!! If you're anything like me, you car resembles a hybrid between a stable and a tack shop. The extra weight really does make a difference to your fuel consumption. Clean out the lot, you only need ONE waterproof coat and some boots in there really! LOL!
* Keep your "for best" clothes just that, it willl save you having to buy new next show season because you've ruined the look by snagging them or staining them.
* Share loads to competitions with friends - it will help with fuel costs and means you can still go out to play from time to time.
Will add more later if I think of any ...

Ask around and see if anyone has any old sleeping bags! They can be used under a lightweight rug for extra warmth on cold nights
Buy that very wide elastic from haberdashers and make your own rug fasteners to keep loose rugs in place, one metre costs around £1 and a snake clip costs almost nothing
Echo they one about a worm count, we have soil analysed once a year and worm as as nd when needed
Same with buying things in bulk, get together with smaller yards and see if they need to order things as well, often if you order over so much in money delivery is free
We have our own hay so thats never an issue but buying from local farmers straight off the filed is a good idea, if theres a few of you then buy the whole field full, if you have surplus you can sell it on as well
If your horse needs oil over the winter in feeds then get large bulk containers from horse feeed place or local chemists will always order in for you, and they will probably give a discount
Same her with the tack swop as well, we also have horsey and non horsey clothes swop, if you need something to wear for a special occasion, then ask around your friends, they might often have a coveted outfit you can borrow and just buy accessories
Sell things on ebay as well, and buy from there too........................... bargains to be had all round!
Remeber ones mans junk is another mans treasure!

Brittle Nails?
If you've got these, forget about going to the chemist and (probably) paying a lot of cash for a tiny little pot of something.
Use Cornucrescene instead. I got some for a friend one Christmas; he played acoustic guitar, hated playing with fingerpicks, but had very brittle nails, and they were always cracking and splitting. I told him to rub a minute amount into the cuticles, once every couple of days, and it worked a treat - his nails grew out both glossy and resilient. His girlfriend was so impressed, she started using it herself! ;D
And there's enough in one tin that you could divvy it up between 20 people - how's that for cheap?
Best regards,
Jack

Fed up with having to use expensive 0870 /0840 numbers? Try using www.saynoto0870.com - fantastic - you get the normal price land line number . If you know of an alternative to 0870 - add it so others can benefit. Got ot say I am super chuffed with this discovery.

For anyone who can get to the Horseware factory in Dundalk in Ireland, do so on November 22nd and 23rd for their gigantic sale. Went to it last year, they have a huge marquee with boxes and boxes of clothes for riders both young and old from 5 euros each! Horse tack and rugs in the sale as well! You can contact the store through the horseware website for details. I'm saving up to go already, great for christmas pressies!

Horseware sale was amazing! Definetly saving up for next year, horse brushes all 1 euro (85p) each, Stable rugs half price, kids waterproof jacket and trouser sets 10euro, and so much more it was unreal! Its very hard to find good value in horse gear in Ireland through lack of competition between shops! The horseware sale is definetly worth getting excited about!
