OH grey arab mare is rugged but she [obviously ]doesnt like the colour i've just watched her roll in the most disgusting liquid slurry-type mud that exists in the world. theres 3 million thousand tonnes hanging off the thing, dripping merrily, her head is no longer white, nor any other bits which stick out from the extreamities. would take a photo but weathers revolting.

LOL! I've got two greys - an arab and a fat cob - and they both like the mud too - oh and sleeping with their faces in pooh!

lol sara lloyds face is like 'sorry mum'!
Whereas my two come up the field, in full camoflage, like 'HEY MUM! look what we did all night! yeah!' Jack seems to have a penchant for rubbing his head in mud at the moment, he gets it all over, round his eyes, in his winter beard! bleurgh!

Having had a heap of greys, in all their glorious shades, all grey owners have my sympathy.
What I would like to know is this........how do they get their foreheads so filthy, what contortions do they perform? One of mine would always have dollops of mud plastered between his eyes but I never actually caught him in the act!

Oh I've watched Arcos as I could never figure out how he did the middle of the face filth, now I know.
When rolling right over, they stretch their heads out and give their faces a right rub, delightful.

I know somone who calls it "putting on their anoraks" i.e. feeling the cold and getting another layer on,. Could be something in that but why do greys do it more than most?

Maybe coz they reflect the light and feel colder?
Or maybe they are all jealous of the brown horses.

I have a chestnut who has perfected the mud between the eyes routine - so much sometimes I can't actually see her star! It involves lying down, then twisting ones neck and grinding ones face into the mud whilst grunting with pleasure.

A non horsey friend of mine jokingly said one day, 'Maybe he likes mud as in the wild he would be easily seen by predators so he needs to camouflage himself'! I did giggle, but maybe she has a point?!

its an awful windy rainy evening in oxfordshire today, my horse has a rug but he has lumps of mud in his mane and ground into his neck, he gets stroppy if I try to pull it out..there is a bay horse under it somewhere, he rolls as soon as I put him out and gets up shakes and looks at me as if to say there I have put it back on again and smirks too.
