I was talking to Anna about using cold tea as a remedy to keeping legs from swelling and it made remember two things which have happened:
One - I told a friend about adding cold tea to the horses feed for the purpose as mentioned above. Two weeks later, i bumped into her and asked how it was going. Apparantly, the horse refused the feeds as " She didn't think he liked the milk and sugar " ? !? !? Doh .....
Also, I once heard of someone who was fairly new to keeping horses. She had called the vet to attend to a leg wound on the horse. The vet had cleaned and dressed it and gone off saying " We will see how it is in a week or so " ..... Yes, you've guessed it. The owner thought she had to leave the dressing until he came back ? !?
I know that i do daft things from time to time, but should we explain better and try to ensure that these often dangerous things don't happen ?

It does Sarah. We personally use cold tea to wet down the feeds of my sisters mare and it works a treat as she suffers terribly from filled legs overnight. Three other people who i mentioned it to, have had wonderful results too. I learnt about it from someone here about four years ago.

Cheers lorraine!
We have an old mare here that lives out with a shelter and hay,she has started getting filled legs so I am guessing she has been standing about too much. Our normal answer to he problem is to turn them out,but that obvioulsy hasnt worked! Will try the tea tomorrow, any particular amount?

What brand of tea ... do you leave it in the tea bag??? Would you recommend you leave it in a plastic cup to avoid any nasty accidents.
Just want to make sure I fully understand what to do!!

We use a jug with one ( PG tips !! ) tea bag and just add the boiling water at some time through the day when we are making our own drinks. Leave the tea bag in for any period of time until cold. Strain and dump the tea bag and then just use the tea to wet down a feed instead of plain water. You do need to keep it up daily to get effective use and stop the legs filling.. Tea is actually a natural diarectic (Sp) and its properties are well documented so should be no danger in using it in this way.

PMSL you lot!! Sherb wouldn't mind the milk and sugar but he would darn well expect it to be accompanied by a digestive biscuit!!

No me neither, sometimes just for the detox I take myself off Tea, i actually feel ill, how bad is that!! Another help for your mare Sarah is a surface she can get toe down in, either sand, or red bed (not sure how that'd cope in a shelter) apparently well banked and compressed straw might do too...
