I think that any significant effect small amounts of ordinary milk chocolate may have on a dog would have to be individual to that particular dog, such as an allergic reaction. Ordinarily, it would take boat loads of ordinary milk chocolate to do any harm to a dog. It is the cocoa that is poisonous to them and there simply isn't enough of it in the type of chocolate most of us eat. My dogs share small amounts of my chocolate regularly and all are still standing. Also my husband is a dog trainer and has done alot of research on dog nutrition due to the fact that he feeds BARF diet, that means he makes all his feed and treats from raw materials himself. Although for obvious reasons chocolate is not recommended as it has high sugar quantities, it shouldn't do a dog any immediate harm if milk chocolate is eaten in small quantities. In fact, even large quantities of it often wouldn't do any harm. I once heard a vet ask a woman how much her dog had eaten, it had stolen a box fulll and had eaten 21 chocolate covered biscuit bars. The dog was fine. Onions are poisonous to dogs though, whilst we're on the subject, you should never feed onions or anything which has any in such as left over gravy. :-)
