Well, I'm a little bit on my own this week as Jo's on the 5 day course so we're taking it easy for a day or two. But, it's amazing what happens when you're not trying. I took a chair and a book and sat in Zorelle's paddock, just reading. She was a little concerned about this new turn of events for a moment but then started her new found skill of coming towards me to make me go away. It's good that she can learn this but I now want her to understand that sometimes I won't go away. And, do you know what, she didn't care! She just took to grazing maybe just a couple of metres away.
Devious trick number 2. My girls are in the far paddock at the moment. There's an empty one, then Zorelle's (a bit of a quarantine, if you like). Remembering Rosie Jone's psychology project that had some evidence that horses can learn from observing others, I went and got Esther and brought her into the middle paddock. We did some leading, some cuddling and some grooming. She's a bit itchy - possible mild sweet itch - so I got my fingers right into her mane and gave her a good rub. She had her neck stuck out and her nose doing her funny "oooooooh that's so good". Zorelle stood with her little head poking over the fence absolutely riveted. She just couldn't quite believe what she was seeing.
It might be just the effect of time, maybe it's a day without pressure, but this evening she's been particularly unconcerned about us, almost confident to just stay where she is while we walked around. Maybe she has seen that humans can be nice?

And this morning when I went to check her, she was standing by the far fence, saw me coming and walked very purposefully towards me. For one moment, I thought she wasn't going to stop! She did, but my oh my how close she got!
