Does she really get more beautiful by the day? We've got as far as touching her with a pole today. I know it may not sound much but for her it's huge. We might go for a hand tomorrow....

Thanks, everyone. She is winning every heart that sees her.
Yes, for training sessions she's going into a small pen area. It's up in her paddock so it's not a new scarey place and today she walked in quite quietly. At the moment, we (Jo Wilson & I) are working on keeping her quiet while a) getting closer and b) expanding the area that she's happy to have touched. Because she had a little kick out yesterday, I actually started with her rump, holding with her while she kicked (poor blue pole) and retreating when she stopped. The kicking stopped pretty quickly. Using the advance and retreat, pressure and release, we've expanded the area we can touch her with the pole to include pretty well the whole of her back, half way up her neck and her shoulder as long as you don't go in front of her leg. That's her really touchy spot. Distance wise, we're maybe a metre or so away now. She'll put her nose towards your hand, getting to literally within an inch of your hand. Oh, you so want to reach out!!!
I'm hoping that just working like this over the next day or two will get us to the point that she'll accept a human touch. The alternative is to try and work something up so that we can clip on the line and just go for it but not only would that be more stressful for her, I also think she's had enough force from humans in her little life. If we can keep working that it is her choice to stay, then so much the better.
The best bit, by the way, is that for the last 5 minutes or so this morning, when Jo was retreating, Zorelle was actually taking 2 or 3 steps towards her. Then, when we opened her pen, she stepped outside, then decided that she'd go back in for a while longer. She knew she could leave but didn't.
Someone else who has rescued a French horse said to me in a PM that she felt guilty that hers was being so easy. No way, I feel completely privileged to be able to work with this little mare, and guilty that I've got her here and am able to do this work with her. Thank you, debutante!

Thanks so much for the update Liz, it's great hearing about her - I had been very worried about her.

great work liz! curious about the pole ( no criticism just curiosity) I can understand that you are using it to avoid injury? but does the horse find it less threatening too? as I would have thought that having been used to men with sticks then a pole could be more scary?absolutely not questioning your actions, just wanting to understand.
