Is it possible to debate in this format? I want to debate that punishment is not appropriate when we are training horses. Will anyone second me and who will oppose me?
Then if the four (ish) people put their points, can we turn it into a discussion debate and get a vote after a few days? Please see rules.
Who wants to try?
edited to change discussion to debate

sounds like a great idea catrin - an online debate with a 'proper' format i feel you may need to expand on 'not appropriate' though - im assuming you mean has negative consequences?

mm depends .... like debates ... I belonged to debating society at school .
However you are not going to make us debate for something we against are you ;D . we used to have to do that to make us examine very carefully the others point of view because you still wanted to win the debate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only thing is I wont be around this evening or tomorrow ..... taking grandchild camping (up to yard ;D) then at work tomorrow till 10.
if you still wanting anyone after than would be interested. will the format be that only the four debaters allowed to speak ... and will there be questions after a set period of time ? ........

School debating is, as you say, to learn how to debate and to help you consider all points of view. I want this to be real, so we only speak for what we believe ourselves. Of course, if we vote at the end, then we may no longer believe that. We would need someone to propose the motion, someone to second the motion, someone to oppose the motion and a seconder for the opposition. Anyone can chip in, but they may do so only once. In order to let everyone have a chance to see the rules and motion. I think we should allow until 9pm Sunday for proposers and opposers to state their case, after that anyone can chip in, but once we are thirty posts (people who've had their say) on from the second opposer, or two days on if there are less, we should ask the opposer to sum up and proposer, then we can vote. If it doesn't work, it's like most of life, if doesn't matter unless you didn't enjoy trying.

1. The debate is chaired by me, who writes out the motion. 2. The first proposer presents the arguments for the motion. 3. The first opposer presents the arguments against the motion. 4. One of the proposers presents their arguments for the motion. 5. An opposer presents their arguments against the motion. 6. This takes place before 9pm Sunday. 7. Once the two proposers and opposers have spoken, anyone else can have their say. You can only speak ONCE during the debate. 8. After thirty posts, the debate closes and the first opposer sums up its group's main argument. 9. The first proposer sums up its group's main argument. 10. Voting can take place - anyone can vote, as long as they have read the arguments.

Here's the motion:
Punishment creates fear andas such has no place in the training of horses.
If you wish to propose that the Group accept this motion, please start your post Proposer 1 and state argument.
If you wish to oppose the motion, please wait for Proposer 1 to speak and then start your post Opposer 1 and state your argument.
Next to speak should be Proposer 2, followed by Opposer 2. After that anyone may speak once, and should state if they are a Proposer or Opposer of the Motion.
Let's hear from you and have a fun and friendly debate.

Hi Catrin, What a great suggestion ;D I'm all in favour of encouraging exploration of ideas and thinking "beyond the surface" in the hope of us all doing better for our selves, our fellow humans and our horses. [Blimey, that sounded pretentious ] Anyway, with that aim in mind I'd be willing to take the position of Opposer to enable a debate to occur. [Now, anyone who's blood just started to boil and has stricken me off their christmnas card list already, please note your reaction - we'll come back to that later... ] So what do I need to do next? Best wishes to all, Derek

Brilliant start, well done Derek and fth, thanks for being brave. Once Proposer 1 posts, Derek you get your opportunity to give us your educated, intelligent, witty, whatever point of view against the motion. Then later on, when I decide we've had long enough or thirty opinions expressed, you sum up all the arguments against the motion, Proposer 1 sums up its group's arguments and we vote. If we're lucky the queen then makes it law - but probably Kelly would have to stand in as she's busy next week.

are you going to define punishment for this debate ?
as i can see a lto of conflicting views otherwise which render the debate pointless

That's a good point, ceiron. Can I also question the wording of the motion (I know, how difficult can a girl be). There are forms of punishment that don't have fear attached that are quite common with horses ("Right, you can stay in your box for an extra hour for that!", "You just didn't try hard enough, you'll have to do it again and serves you right"). Both are (and this isn't part of the debate yet) equally ineffective but your wording excludes the non-fear type. Can we think of a wording that covers all types of punishment?
We've got 2 opposers, any proposers yet?
