We are from Berkshire too - West of Reading to be precise! I did think there would be more of us on here as I am sure there are a few of us in Berkshire, so do make yourselves known everyone as Seabiscuit says! ;-)
A very little bit about us - I am currently training to be a Bowen Therapist, which is brilliant, and will be starting my Teacher Training with Enlightened Equitation in October, which I can't wait for! Tim, my OH, is a DAEP (basically a KC La Pierre trained Equine Podiatrist, incase those letters don't mean anything to anyone!!). He is also just starting to learn Western Carina and his new toy is a Barefoot Arizona saddle, which he just loves!
We already know Seabiscuit and her horse - we were there when they won their first rosette together (well, actually it was a second, but it should have been a first!) and perhaps we will meet some more of you along the way?! :-)

I'm a berks person (but not a berk!), horse and I live in Thatcham. I know Louise, Tim, and Donniedarco.. Nina I've met, Rosie RA helped me start my horse, and Daisy and Sandra kindly took us to the show Lou mentions, so I've met a few of you from here!

Hi, I'm not living in Berkshire yet, but if my new job works out, I'll be moving to Reading soon (from the US). I was wondering if you locals could give me some recommendations. I ride gaited horses (preferably Icelandics) and would like to get my own horse once I've settled in. Until then, I'll be looking for an opportunity to ride. So, do you have any recommendations on - good boarding stables close to Reading? I'll be looking for a place with 24hr turnout and limited access to pasture (e.g. large paddock with herd or similar) - what areas are good for trail riding? I like to get on my horse and go out, so I'd like to find a place close to good riding trails. - barefoot hoofcare providers? - I've been living in Colorado for a while, and rain is rarely a problem here. Do you feel that access to an indoor arena is a must, particularly in winter, or do you manage without? - opportunities to ride gaited horses, until I've had a chance to get my own?
Any tips will be welcome. Thanks!

Hi Maggie! I can help particularly with one of your requests and can give you my thoughts on the others! My OH is a DAEP (basically K C La Pierre trained) and so could provide you with the barefoot hoofcare you need! Take a look at his website if you like - www.appliedequinepodiatry.co.uk. As for the other things.... - Not sure about gaited horses - I haven't come across any around this way that belong to a stables (only privately owned ones), but that certainly doesn't mean that they don't exist here, so maybe someone else may know? - There are a fairly good selection of stables around Reading so you should be able to find something that suits as there are a good variety. When it gets nearer to you coming over and you know where you will be I am sure that we can all give you some advice from our experiences! - Again, areas for trail riding depend on where you are going to be exactly but there is some lovely hacking in forests and things - I think my vote would be for Bramshill Forest and the Englefield Estate. Of course there is also Windsor Great Park which is lovely. I am sure there are other places that people will mention, but they are the ones that spring to mind for me! - I think that probably the majority of us manage with just an outdoor arena (as long as it is well draining) as there aren't many places with an indoor that are livery yards. It will probably be a bit of a shock to you having to ride out in the rain, so get some good waterproof clothes and a waterproof exercise sheet and you'll be fine! There aren't many days when you really can't ride I find - I only avoid it really if it is very windy (which I would if I was using an Indoor arena too I think) or if it is snowy/icy - and firework night of course! ;-) I hope that helps a bit! By all means feel free to post any more questions as I am sure we will be happy to answer! It must be pretty daunting coming over here from the States, but don't worry we are all a very friendly bunch and will look after you if you need it!!

Hello Louise, thanks for your reply. I know it's probably a bit early to start making specific plans, but it's still good to get the lay of the land, so to speak. I'm glad to hear that there are nice trail riding opportunities in the area, and that most people get along without an indoor arena. I'm actually not a complete stranger to rainy days, since I'm from Germany originally. I've just lived in the states for the past 6 years :-) Also thanks for the info on barefoot care. I'll definitely keep it in mind, and I'm sure I'll be back with more specific questions once I move.

Where in Reading are you going to live.
You will need to get out of Reading if you want good riding.
I live om the edge of Reading but have a yard on the edge of Bramshill Forest.
I have 4 Arabs (Endurance horses) and a little NewForest Pony
Ask any questions you like

I (will) be in the Marlow/Henley area after Christmas and I am desperately trying to find a yard or private stable for for my horse and possibly my son's mini-shetland. Would also like to contact like-minded people.

Hello,
Well I just moved to Harwell near Didcot so thought I'd say hi. Think it's officially Oxfordshire but has been Berkshire in the past, does that count?? I am often to be found teaching or schooling at Alden Livery in Upton, look forward to meeting some more IH folk around here. ;D
Take care,
Annabelle

Hi Annabelle,
Tim (OH) trims at Alden, so perhaps we may see you there in our travels at some point? :-) It is a lovely neck of the woods - I would so love to be able to find a bit of land there!

Hi Louise,
I met one of the new girls working on the sport horse yard at Alden, Tim trims her grey horse - great to have some barefoot knowledge among the staff, I think most of them think my clients and I are a bit mad! Hopefully she will be looking after my client's horses' feet, which is great. (Lesley Evans usually does the trims.)
Let me know when Tim/you are over there, it would be nice to put the BF people in touch with each other, I am sure they would enjoy the moral support and it woudl be good to meet you.
Annabelle
