Hi, I have been passed a link today from Thundersprite for a website regarding british horse slaughter they have an online petition thought firstly that we could all go on and sign the petition but we could have one on our website, i have written to them (the email is below) asking them to put us on there links page and we will do likewise, i dont mean to take our attention away from the french rescue but thought this would be a good idea for the people wanting to help but do not have much money or cannot afford the travel etc - please take a look at there website and sign the petition. www.britishhorseslaughter.orgHi I have just been passed your website and have just had a read i cannot believe this happens here i was shocked to find out it happened at all just a few weeks ago i was on the Monty Roberts website in the Discussion Group and found out it happens in france and we have been rescuing horses im so shocked it happens in britain so im going to pass your website to all that have been touched by this on the discussion group so that they can sign the petition i have included an email below that i have sent to most companies and livery yards etc please could i add your website to this so that people can sign your petition and help, also we have a website running which is www.equinesection.com there are lists on here of all the horses due to be taken for slaughter to italy by wagon would you mind adding this website to your links page? I also hate the fact that horses go for meat atall, however,is this abbatoir not doing what we are all campaigning for and killing horses at the country of origin? personally if I had to have a horse put down for any reason then it would be done at home, however at least these horses arent facing a horrific journey to france/italy to be slaughtered and I really think that that is all we can hope for at the moment. Also, imo, the problem lies with the racing industry and breeders that are producing excess/unsuitable horses rather than the abbatoirs.

Yes, I don't like it, would never send one of my own there (they rang me up and tried to buy Mace!) (like I would EVER consider it!) ~BUT it is EXACTLY what we are campaigning for, isn't it?

totally agree with sarah. also dont think than any tom dick or harry should be allowed to breed any animal to make money.....there are too many unwanted animals as it is, dont need to add to the problem.....

Melissa you are quite right there should be stricter breeding so people can't just do it to make money!

What will happen to these horses if we can put a stop to this ? Will they then be transported in awful conditions to france only to be slaughtered there !!! We are trying to get ON THE HOOK and that is what we are getting. I don,t know - should I sign it - or not.

Good question Gill they will either find loopholes and they will travel miles to slaughter or they will be starved to death at the point of origin. It may not be a pleasant idea but a quick end is better than a lot of the possible outcomes even if the trauma is as nasty as claimed on the site. At least it doesn't last too long. Not that I advocate killing Horses but I have seen and heard of some pretty inhumane things being done to them in the name of rescue. I have bought from the markets to prevent meat men taking them one such was a lovely hunting mare that had been worked to a standstill as a hireling and she had been clipped fully they had then reclipped her taking most of the skin off along a trace clip. She was hat rack thin and had been hunted at least three times a week all winter. Six months later she was a happy fat fit showjumper at local level and only woked about an hour a day 6 days a week. She had her issues but nothing to prevent her being a good allrounder. I have also had ex-racers and semi feral natives in the past. If I could afford to have another I would do it again tomorrow I have the land and time but not the cash to do them justice so I believe it is sensible to wait until I have both.

Another one here who can not sign this. I have seen loads of horses and ponies "rescued" from slaughter who live such miserable lives that they are better off dead. I would never send mine there, but you can at least make appointments and stay with your horse up to the end and, to be honest I my daughter did her work experience with South Yorkshire Police who took an unsound horse there, the office had ridden that horse and did not want to do it, but he was used to travelling, had no idea he wasn't going to a job and it was so quick and efficient he had no idea. It is the poor sods who get travelled from sale to sale crammed in lorries (have witnessed this too) often wild, who should never have been bred, old, unsound or just worn out that I object to, and if their owners must squeeze every penny out of them then it would be more honest to take them there than condem them to an uncertain future by taking them to the sales where they just lay down their responsibilities and "presume" that they get good homes. I bought one such very pregnant shetland mare that had stickers on it showing that it had been through 3 such sales in a week.
