I was up at a local cross country course. It's open every year for an event, and then turned over to the local riding club the following weekend, which is where I was today. Seeing everyone hooning around, I was very dispondant, and imagined myself getting run off with or trotting around lopping over Blue's neck at every try... God, forbid I should jump successfully. Well, now I've changed my mind. I'm going to formulate a plan to join the riding club and get to that little training thing next year. So what if I did trot around the whole course, plenty of very smart looking rider were doing just that. Here goes nothing! Rode out today by the way... very on his toes, but we managed. Changed saddles to a lighter one for the ride to give him as much help as possible. Clung on!

Kanga - I wonder if you worry too much about what other riders think of your abilities or that other riders are better than you? I hope that what you watched today made you realise that they're not, and that you have as much right as anyone there to have a go - even if it is in trot.
Myself, if I am watching a local show, I am willing everyone around the course - and I am talking about total strangers!!!! (or is that just me?)
And ....... with your determination, I just know you're going to do this, if that is what you have decided to do! xx

Well, or course after chest thumping moment... now wondering how to preceed! I'm going to work at canter for the next month, getting myself used to more speed (not that canter has to be fast, but it's the point at which my nerves start jangling). April= month of the canter.
Wozzer... I don't only think they are better than me, I think they are different creatures altogether. Totally awed! I just want a bucketful of that courage beyond the cantering in the woods I have got to.

What a great goal to set Now you need to break it down a bit more, into bitesize pieces These bitesize pieces might include canter, poles, mini size jumping at home etc, and set a timeframe that you want to achieve these mini goals within, the timeframe can always be adjusted Join the riding club and go to some of their training if you can, you will find that many others have confidence issues/young horses/both and they often have club-only competitions where you will have lots of friends supporting you

Thanks Hannah. I am going to get a box, as this would put me in touch with other riders at the RC. I ride alone almost always and have only one neighbour with a horse. The isolation is not good for either of us. I will indeed try setting myself bite-sized goals and have cantering calming in the field (as opposed to danger dashes around the forest) as my first one. Next we need to jump.. something I haven't done in years! My horse is 5, but I know he can jump as he was in a local competition league with someone else and people remember him as being rather good and very keen, so things should go well. Pen and paper.... thanks.
