Ok this is my ned. I have lots of questions! I only want to do a local 'prettiest mare' class but will I be told she is too fat? I am 5 months pregnant (I may be told I'm too fat!!!) and haven't ridden her for ages so she's piled on the pounds. Also do I need to spruce her up a bit? If so what?!!

Cant comment on the fat aspect, need to see a side picture for that.
I wouldnt worry about her fitness for the prettiest mare class as I doubt you will be asked to do individual shows.
If you were doing a proper show class though you should get her into shape before competing. An unfit puffing horse will be marked down.
As for tidying up i think her long mane looks lovely, perhaps trim her chin a bit though? Although for certain classes you may have to plait up so the mane would have to be shortened. I'd leave it long for prettiest mare class though.
Good luck.

Will be in hand as she will be too much for me at a show after so long unridden. Just wanted to do something before she goes out on loan really. Thanks anyway for your advice

Marigold if its just local and in-hand I would say go for it but be careful with your tum She looks nativey? and for prettiest mare I would say make her look as appealing as possible, ie as long as that mane (and rest of her) are scrupulously clean, but you will want o make her stand out to catch the eye, so night before I would dampen the clean mane do long fattish plaits and leave in overnight pref. with hood to keep it clean and over right side, same with tail (no hood ) and bandage and only take out around half hour to hour before class, you will have a lovely rippled affect, then really gloss spray both so that as she moves it glistens. Practice beforehand so you know how near to class to leave in before it all drops straight and how much gloss to get balance right. The rest is down to pure elbow grease for both ned and handler. You could also do one long plait behind poll with discreet bow at end. Prettiest mare is usually going for 'cute' factor as much as anything. Have a nice day and be prepared to have to trot out in hand, so do some don't depending on how low key.
