My friend has been getting her mare and foal ready for the big local show for a few weeks and was horrified when her entry was returned as her mare isn't registered. Is this normal? It is very unclear on the entry form but I can't see anywhere where it says they have to be. I think she says it will cost £88 to register mare foal and herself so as it was just for fun it isn't worth it but she is upset as you can imagine!

Yes - for big shows horses may have to be registered

Thanks anon, but shouldn't it say on the schedule then? You say 'may' not 'have to be'?

The schedule may have stated something like "Affiliated to the LHHS" or something (whatever the shwoing body is nowadays)

I think most of the mare and foal classes ask for registration as the mare is being judged for her ability to breed to a certain standard. Winning with a registered mare and/or foal means that a certain standard has been reached, and the horses value should go up accordingly. If your friend has a good mare who breeds quality foals, then registration may be worth her while in the long term. If however, it's a "one off" showing experience, the cost may well not be justified.
