As we have a rather flat backed difficult to fit native pony,I wondered if anyone could tell me if there are any bespoke saddle makers in Yorkshire? I've not had too much success so far finding a suitable saddle 'off the peg'. I understand that the Saddle Exchange do made to measure ones but they are in Somerset! Any info would be appreciated.

Erm not too sure but I buy all my horsey stuff from Parnaby's in Malton, they have a wonderful saddler there - i'm not sure if he actually makes saddles but if he doesn't i'm sure he'll be able to suggest somebody - Tell him Amelia from Surrey recommended and i'm sure he'll treat you well :-)
Otherwise my biggest recommendation is Kay Humphries (Barry Swain actually makes the saddles) she is more than brilliant, not from Yorkshire but she does travel all over. Her shop is Norton & Newby

Sarah Dent, the RA for west yorks also does saddles. I'm sure she'd be really helpful. her contact details will be on the RA page.

Native Pony Saddle Company are definitely worth looking at - they're part of Saddle Exchange, but they do have a couple of fitters across the country. I'm in Scotland and I managed to get two of their saddles - so much better than the ones I had before which had been professionally fitted but weren't made on flat enough trees.

Yes Sarah Dent RA for our area is a registered Saddle Fitter for The Saddle Company. She is always very helpful. Ive used her a couple of times, but not for saddle fitting.

I bought my Saddle Co saddle from (and had it fitted by) Sarah Dent. Would definately recommend her and the saddles.

We now do the saddle company saddles for a 30 mile radius of Barnsley. Not sure what is happening with Sarah and Carolyn regarding their business as they have not been contactable for a while (I bought Pies saddle from them and have been trying for 4 months to get them out to check it but in the end Stan checked it as part of his saddle fitter training)

Thank you very much for replies to all..and sorry I've been away all day so could not get back on here before now. I have contacted the 'Native Pony Saddle Co'..aka Saddle Exchange.I really woulld prefer to have their saddles but they told me their fitter had to come up from Somerset and would be unlikely to be up in Yorks until late May if then!I'm a bit reluctant to take a chance and send to them for a saddle in case it does'nt fit and would have preferred to have a measure done professionally. Is there some confusion btw between the Saddle Company and the Native Pony Saddle co ? It's the latter I need really as they do rate highly with buyers for M+M types.I may give Throstle Nest a spin at Silkstone and if not successful may just hang on for the people from Somerset.
Kermie..who did your fitting etc? or did you just buy the NPSC ones off the peg?

Kermie..who did your fitting etc? or did you just buy the NPSC ones off the peg? Andrea was up in Scotland at an equine event and I managed to piggyback on that. I did get two off the peg saddles to fit my "difficult to fit" Fells though. I had given her some pics and a flexicurve of the pony's backs and in each case, the first saddle Andrea produced fitted....although she did try a few more on each of them to show she wasn't just making do They used to do a single postage option for trying saddles, eg I paid a one off £15 and then got saddles sent one at a time to try for size, but I don't know if they still do that. If you are in a hurry, it may be worth trying the photos and flexicurve option to see if Andrea can send you something that fits. Might even be worth getting a saddle sent and if you think it fits you could pay for a professional opinion from a local Master Saddler? Although as I said earlier, my previous saddles were professionally fitted (both by different Master Saddlers) but neither really fitted - they kept going up the ponies' necks.

There is always Peter Hay from Bridlepath International in Bury St Edmunds. He is a master saddler and brilliant. I would not have anyone else touch my saddle. He does travel and has 100s of saddles both new and 2nd hand. I well recommend him

I think Peter Hay has given up completely from what I can understand. My friend swears by him as well.

Do try Kay Humphries. The Barry Swain saddles that she supplies are excellent . Kay has saddle fitters in various places so she is likely to be able to send someone out to you to measure up your pony and make sure the saddle fits. the after sales service is excellent too.
