Anyone else had or heard of this problem, maybe it's psychological even.
Yesterday proved my point!
Novice boyfriend usually rides my friends mare and she is fine with him, I ride her and she decides to spin round go up in the air etc!
I try to be extra considerate etc and I do think I am anyway.

Odd...my very first horse ever was a mare and I never had any problems with her or any mare I have had since. Even when I go on trail rides at vacation spots I usually try to get a mare because all the geldings I have ever had on trail rides have given me so many problems.
But of course now I have a gelding of my own so I am not as biased. I still prefer a mare, because sometimes my gelding has what I like to call, "stupid man problems" ;D. He took some getting used to, but I trust him now, and he is such a big baby that I didn't notice too much a difference between him and a mare like I have in the past with other geldings.

Depends on the horse really but generally I prefer mares. There is something in the old saying though...
"Tell a gelding, ask a mare and discuss it with a stallion"!

Out of all the horses ive ridden, most of the time the Mares have had more manners than the Geldings! A horse that has manners is important to me! lol

Mares are fantastic. But you need to be black and white with them, so to speak. Firm but fair. They need to know exactly what it is that you require of them and you need to be able to comunicate this to them directly. Its no use asking them in a half hearted manner or they will take the mickey make sure she understands what it is you are asking otherwise she may also become confused.
