what would you say would be an ideal wieght for a 15'2hh welshcob typed pony to carry (especially for backing as i realise she will need to build up muscle). ive come to the conclusion that Dizzy isnt going to grow into the 16hh+ that she was sold to become... and i keep saying ill sell her if she doesnt but realisticly i know that i couldnt because i adore her! so ive decided thatthe only other option is for me to loose wieght! so just going for a goal wieght! ths is her a few weeks ago... she is rising 3 (in april)

For a mature, muscled up 15.2 Welsh Cob type I think a maximum of around 14 stone. My OH is 13 stone and rides my 15.1 Welsh D with no problems.
For backing a 3 year old, I'm not sure, probably more like about 10/11 stone until she's fitter and matured a bit.

I think that for serious riding about 14stone max and for the odd pootle about 15.5stone max and for backing I would say max 12/13 stone really

I was going to say roughly the same as Magnum....once she's muscled up she could easily carry up to 14st...my mare is 15hh and a Sec D type build and once she's muscled up....I'm say nearer 10/11st for backing

right i wiegh about 13.5 stone atm i certainly wouldnt be happy on her atm i would feel far too big! however i am only 5'3 so there is no reason that if i loose wieght that i will be too big for her.
ive always been really cautious about my wieght and have always felt too big for most horses, hence i bought Otto when i was 15 (and wieghed much less). i make such a huge thing about it in my head that i have mannaged over the yrs to convince myself i am too big to ride 'nomal' horses (even tho i dont see a problem with other people m size riddint there horse) but i do love Dizzy to pieces so ive decided that im gonna sort my issues lol

You don't need to lose much soph really, you don't weigh so much less than me, i'm usually about 12st and sherb has carried me fine since 4. I never felt for one second he was struggling. Maybe if you weigh 13.5 make your target 11. If you're not backing her for about 15 months you only really aiming for less than a pound a week. That should be relatively easy. Also you're not trying to lose it too quick which would mean a higher risk of putting it back. Keep us updated. Have you got a plan yet? Sorry meant to say you don't weigh much more than me, and now i think of it I hope i've got that right!! I seem to remember seeing your weight on one of the other too heavy threads and being really surprised that it was much more than you look. It might not have been you though in which case you may well weigh less than I.

Just a thought but why don't you set a target which is a healthly weight for you and takes into a normal BMI range?

about 14/15 stone if the rider was good and sat well.
If you've not lost the weight by the time she is 4 then I'd send her away to be backed and have her back when she's been backed for a few months and has muscled up.
Although frankly and I hope you're not offended by this, your life will improve in myriad ways if you want to loose the weight and do manage it - not just because you'll be able to ride more horses and back your own.

I've not read the other replies and although it's hard to tell how much chunkier she might get, I would probably say a max of 11 stone for backing and once fit and muscled up to 13 stone maybe 14. I'm not sure if you meant that Dizzy is roughly a Sec D build or if she does have D in her, but it's worth bearing in mind sec D's don't tend to physically mature or finish filling out until they are 7 or even 8.
I would echo what Thelwall says, if you want to lose it anyway and you sound like you do then use this as your motivation. I lost nearly 3 stone when I was younger just so I could ride my pony, it was the best motivation I have ever had!

she is sec D X percheron, as a baby she looked like she was going to take after the percheron although as she has grown up she is looking much more like she is gonna be welsh cobby. i need to loose wieght anyway so thought ild use the pony as inspiration! i realise she still has a lot of filling out to do but i have always been cautious about my wieght when ridding and ild love to be able to eliminate that.
