I have heard that its meant to be cold Wed and Thurs, perhaps only 1 or 2 degrees during the day and a chance of some snow!
Certainly not worried about my boys, I'd worry more in wet and windy weather. In the cold they just fluff up! I may be persuaded to put some hay out for the first time this year if the snow covers the ground.
I guess the ice on the water trough is my only concern, as the other owner only breaks it, but leaves the ice in so it quickly refreezes. I may ask my dad to pop up again in the evenings to check it as they live closer than I do!
Look on the bright side, we might get to take some nice 'ponies in the snow' piccies for next years calender!!!!!

aren't there bears in canada Yep ;D Lots in BC, but that's 3500 miles away. Some here in Ontario but further North, there have only been half a dozen reported sightings of bears in this area in the past dozen years and those have just followed the river down and are lost! We have more wolves and coyotes, and there have been some lynx seen too, nothing much to worry about. says she, getting blase about it, when I first came here I wouldn't go out of the house because the coyotes sounded so close, now I don't worry. we get them in our forest which is 100yards from the house. the only one I have actually seen was a squashed one just down the road from here. poor thing!

I've been to canada briefly - I went to see Niagara falls for my 30th birthday and walked over the bridge from um, that bit by Buffalo (it was a while ago!) it was amazing and I would love to live there... but I'm scared of bears. And wolves. LOL

Canada is fine, we thought briefly about emigrating to Australia but there REALLY ARE too many things over there that want to bite you!
We live an hour from the Falls. Did you go on The Maid of the Mist? I was a little disappointed when we first went to see them, I was expecting them to be a bit more impressive from everything I'd heard about them. Flipping wet too, I am taking a waterproof coat next time I get dragged there by relatives, the spray travels a long way.

Well our farmer isn't unduly concerned and she is normally 100% where the weather is concerned- and we do have a mega cattle trough under the water tap in the barn to help in case the pipes freeze - and I always have a large water container in my feed cupboard which I plan to lag with bubble wrap tomorrow. However I have been into various weather sites and all I can see is lowest Temps of -2 for Thursday and a bit if snow for my area. Keep warm and stock up on chocolate is my advise

Im not worried about our horses, Red has a very warm rug we can put on, Jimmy can have a stable rug under his turnout as can Misty. Im glad hubby asked them to take off the stable rug Mistys rider had under his turnout in the mild weather, he will feel the benefit of it when its cold. Bramble can have an extra layer as well, and we bought her a cozy new rug for Christmas. If it does go VERY cold the yard cats will have to come home for a while. Im not sure its going to be THAT bad though.

My two live out - with a field shelter. I'm not worried about it turning very cold as they will be fine with ad lib hay. At least if it turns cold I will have a chance to use the warmer rugs! They are both still in their medium weight turnouts as it is so mild.

The lowest I can see in our area is -1 and a bit of snow. Fingers crossed thats right. I'm in the Midlands. and after reading rummi's article I don't think I can cope with -12!

Nic b........sure you can.
Add another layer, cover your head and your nose (otherwise the hairs freeze...honest!) and stick some grit/salt and a shovel etc in your car.
Oh, and don't touch anything metal with wet fingers...or, as my brother did, just because he thought he'd try it...lick a metal gate, he got his tongue stuck!!!!!!!!! (and this guy does something technical with airplanes for a living, worrying)
It's only forecast for a couple of days so far isn't it?

TBH it isn't so much the intensity as the duration - hard frosts and snow for a couple of days is just something to be endured for a while, it's if it lasts for a couple of weeks or more - frozen water pipes and troughs are then a real problem as there is no relief in sight and you can't survive on just the contents of a trough. You then have to work out how to stop them freezing or to thaw them if they do (and drain hosepipes and keep them inside in case you can thaw a tap and get chance to fill a trough with them).

I'm NOT impressed :-( The MAX temperature yesterday was minus one so the water pipe that supplies the field remained frozen. Generally by late afternoon there's been enough heat and I can fill all the water troughs but yesterday had to make 8 trips with the wheelie/jerrycan . Hrmph ...
