Bit cynical about weather forecasts - so I'll believe it when i see it!! lol Just have a plan and you'll all be fine. Maybe you'll all wake up to this, my trees were naked yesterday! Thank Heavens I have snow ploughs and don't have to clear my tracks by hand. I had beautiful clear tracks from house to barn to paddocks last night (from my basement door)

I suspect its a slow news day and the papers are exaggerating somewhat! All that Carol Kirkwood woman said this morning was something about the weather turning a bit colder weather and the small possibility of some snow.

The big freeze is from the long range forecast and is due to hit next week with thursday being the worst day. There really is no need to panic, horses are perfectly capable of withstanding much colder temperatures than the -17 predicted, which I doubt we shall get anyway. As already mentioned water is the most important thing, make absolutely sure that they have access to water at least twice a day.Lots of forage and rug well ( if rugged, perhaps consider rugging if they have little or no shelter)and they will be fine. I certainly wouldnt suggest that people bring horses in that normally live out. Probably the biggest thing many need to consider is how they will get there twice a day if the roads are covered in snow.

surrey's too posh for snow, we went down to -4 not too long ago and it was frozen all day. gave us a day off from mud fever watch and just gave them a bale of hay to munch on in the field...arabs are tough really, they just need reminding

Ah Gingitsu I'm afraid Surrey isn't too posh for snow, I remember back when I was a kid and lived just outside Dorking we had a massive snow fall and with huge drifts, so we were completely snowed in, mind you I don't think Surrey has since seen such a snowfall!

Here's the long range weather forecast from the BBC:
By Wednesday an easterly wind from the near continent will bring much lower temperatures and the risk of some sleet and snow for Eastern parts of the UK at first, a similar risk further west later. On Thursday it will be cold and windy everywhere with snow flurries in the northeast and later on in the south of the UK.
Through Friday and into Saturday we start to pick up the Atlantic influence with a deep low near Iceland spreading wind and rain across all parts for the first part of the weekend and it will begin to turn milder.

Oh you do have some beautiful photos. Everyday looks like Christmas there ( sigh ) It IS glorious, I just adore this weather, not cold today, about -4C out there. I have just taken this about 10 minutes ago from my sitting room window, child sat in the snow throwing snowballs for the dog and hubby clearing the drive on good old Quadly. It's cleared a bit now, half an hour ago our world ended at the trees at the edge of the yard, couldn't see the field beyond. Right now I can see 7 white tail deer out in the wheat field in front of us. I dread summer coming. My horses are heads down in the paddocks eating, all perfectly happy, and wearing a couple of inches of snow on their backs.

My farmer OH just told me the temps are only expected to go down to +3 by Thurs. but then we are in the South. Mine are QH and go in at night anyway so they can withstand quite a lot of cold. It was colder than this a couple of weeks ago.

Calamity, you're right, these QH's are as tough as old boots, mine aren't even rugged yet.

Well mine will all be outside as they are every day of their lives, I am sure I will not find them frozen to death or anything like! I am not going into panic mode about this we don't get dreadful weather here and never get snow and I have all the food I need for them and plenty of hay and haylage, Horses are alot tougher than people give them credit for, with good rugs I am sure peole's horses will be just fine, and guess what all mine have for shleter is the hedges, and shock horror they're Arabs living out 24/7 man i'm cruel !!!! Lol.
