Is this normal for a HORSE?? Can anyone help me, for the last 2 weeks my horse's dropping have decreased!!! Averaging from only 2 during the day (meaning 9-4) which use to be about 5-6 droppings. And in her stable during the night she will only do about the same!! I havent changed her feed, or incresed or decreased her hay... Nothing has changed, shes fine aswell!! A few people have said that its fine and not to worrie unless she becomes ill or shes different. But i cant help worring that it could be serious and i didnt want it to be to late to do anything!! Can anyone help please... Thankyou Laura x

Well, don't let me alarm you, but it could (and please note COULD) be an impactation starting? I had a horse whose droppings decreased over a week. Rang the vet who said to give her plenty of salt and sloppy feeds and keep an eye on her. At the end of the week she had a full impactation and was was rushed to horsepital. Needless to say, by the time she had had 4 nervous poo's in the trailer she was ok enough to just need a few days on a drip!
Keep your eye on your horse closely. Plenty of salt in the feed to encourage drinking, sloppy feed etc and count droppings each day. To be honest, if it were me, I would err on the side of caution and ring your vet for advice asap.
Good luck and let us know how it goes. I am a worrier about poo since my experience!

I appreciate your concern. My mare was not drinking at night. Her bucket would be barely touched in the morning and her hay net half full. She is fine now. I worried at the time and counted poos like you. In a few days things gradually improved without my getting to the point of asking the vet.
Thinking about it later, I realized the mare was unhappy generally at the time, mostly due to discomfort in her front feet. She had had a session with the equine podiatrist and was a bit sore. Maybe your horse had a worry. They are emotional creatures and can get down about things which affects their appetite, digestion etc, a bit like us.
It would be good to review your horse's management if you can't account for this blip though. Maybe you need to increase fibre or oil or gradually change some other aspect of the feeding.

Thankyou all so much for your advise, it has really helped me speaking to people who have gone through the same experience. I am definatly going to get some advice from my vet for a peace of mind as nothing has changed since i wrote my first message. And i dont want it to get to the point where its too late incase it is an impaction.
Thankyou again Laura & Megan
