Hey i'm new to this forum stuff so hope it all makes sense. i need help.
My pony is a 12.3 10 yrs new forest (we think) she is fully clipped so is in at night, my main problem is that she has suddenly developed this cough. i assumed it was from the hay as it seems very dusty. i have been soaking it but it doesn't seem to be working (i.e. shes not improving) she is on rubber matting with the smallest amount of shaving so there is minimum dust about. i always make sure her dinner is wet so that's not dry either. not sure what to do. there is no discharge from her nose or anything and she seems her normal self it's just this coughing.
anyone got any ideas on what it could be or what else i could do. thanks everyone

Is it constant coughing or only when stabled? got haynet? when fed?
hhmm have you tried any of the "cough meds"?? how long have you been soaking the hay? does she have hay in the field?
If you've been soaking it for 5-7 days and she's still coughing, doesnt not have hay in the field unless soaked and have tried or dont want to try the cough meds then i'd get in touch with your vet.

coughing is not constant and seems to be worse when exercised and when she first comes out of stable. she has hay in haynets and none in field as there is grass. have been soaking hay for about a week now but haven't tried any meds could you recommend any that are any good.
cheers

You say she has very little shavings in her stable, but what about any stables around her? Do they for instance have straw? Would also feed hay off floor if possible. Cant recommend any cough medicine, but am sure someone else will come back to you on that one. My daughters two horses had a virus this year which ended up with a cough and mucus from the nose. Have any other horses around her been coughing or not well? Good luck and let us know how she goes please. Modified to add a big welcome to the forum.

Hello Lucy ;D Lucy is my closest horsey friend, we hack and hunt together. And spindle is possibly the coolest pony I know. Lucy and I look funny when we hunt together...a 21 (22 now? I cant remember) on a 12.3, and me 20 on a 13.2. woo. I know that spins stable doesnt have any near it so thats not whats causing the coughs I have suggested feeding hay from the floor as that is what my vet suggested for little Megans slight COPD. I know that spin has a haynet as she wolfs her hay otherwise and gets rather fat ;D

When my pony started coughing i ordered some goldlable killkof - didnt need it in the end as soaking solved my problem but someone had told me that it was good stuff.
If the same goes for horse cough syrup as it does for ours (the worse it tastes the more it works) this stuff will be fab!! It smells awful!! And i mean really bad! Its got garlic oil in it for starters!!

UPDATE! All seemed ok yesterday but didn't ride, decided top take her small walk to day and she was coughing, it now only seems to happen when she's exercised. Rang vets and they have recommended using 'Respadril' which is a 5 day course. just have to see how goes, if this doesn't work have to have vet out to check her over.
thanks for all the advice i'll let you know how she goes on this stuff
