I was so pleased to read the advice of Paul Teasdale, Chief Field Officer for the ILPH in this weeks' Horse and Hound:
"Most equines do not work very hard, do not compete and do not require anything other than grass and hay to eat....." Save for a bit of feed balancer, this is exactly what Petra Perkins and my native ponies are getting this winter. Sometimes horses arrive at my yard and take up less space than the food supplies that come with them!
Unfortunately the New Special report which dealt with human weight limits for horses was much less helpful - in the sample weight chart it says that the maximum carrying weight for a 12hh, 8 year old pony is 5st 71bs with the saddle. No mention of the type of pony we are talking about. They say that a 15 year old 14hh horse should only carry 8st with the saddle and yet a horse that it only 5 inches taller could carry 13st 7lbs with saddle. In any event I am going to have to go on a diet and my ponies aren't.
