Im not sure if anyone will remember her but 3 years ago tomorrow i went and picked up an unwanted mare called Abbey, from Stonehaven in scotland. She was advertised on here (well the old board) by a girl called Suzy as she had been abandoned for 8 years and was now going to be PTS. I went to see her and fell inlove and she came home with me.
I am so sad to say that she was put to sleep on wednesday. I am devastated. She was meant to be unridable and her job was to simply be a companion to my 2 boys. She was SO much more than that. As for being unridable well she never put a foot wrong, I got on her after a week and she has been ridden since. The highlight being getting to the veteran horse society regional finals in both the inhand and ridden classes. getting 3rd.
She was the sweetest most gentle mare, never put a foot wrong and always polite and just nice, and really touched me in a special way in the 3 years she was with me.
Unfortunately her past seemed to catch up with her and her body was giving up. She looked so well it was hard to accept that she was getting old and her body was giving up, she was only 20. So we said goodbye on wendesday before she suffered too much.
I have a huge hole in my heart now and miss her dreadfully.
If I can work out how to post pics I will.

Your horse could not have had a better last 3 years it sounds like.
The loss of a friend will never be easy but you can be easy that she had the best up to the end.

Oh bless her - RIP Abbey - she must have had a wonderful time with you - and be proud of yourself of making the right decision for her. The final act of unselfishness.
