anyone feeding this for old pony with cushings?

Hi Guys, I thinking of getting this feed for my old pony who is 36yrs
she has cushings, she is very well at moment
she can't cope on high fi lite of spillers high fibre cubes, or most foods
so thinking of trying this with her,as she seems to cope on makways blue bag horsehage has anyone tried this? or are using it for same reasons??is this same as hi fi lite? does anyone know?Thank you love Vxxx

only problem is she doesn't do as well with markways purple bag horsehage which has timothy grass's in it, she only copes on the blue bags of markways.
so will this be same because its got timothy grass's in it?

'Senior' feeds are often too high in energy for laminitics. They seem to be for oldies who need feeding up.

Have a look at simple system feeds they do not add any sugars. The Lucerne stalks suit my laminitics.

Hi V, is this little April? You must be doing a fantastic job with her, well done! I can't really comment on the feeds, although I think oil is best avoided if I remember rightly, it might be worth putting up a fao for Jackie Taylor, she seems very up on cushings and insulin resistance etc. I have used the blue bag haylage and think it is just a higher fibre version of the ordinary stuff. Timothy is quite fibrous, but might be more difficult for her to chew if her teeth are a bit dodgy. Have you tried speedibeet, I know it is low sugar and suitable for laminitics as well as easy to chew and digest, I mix it with a bit of chaff for mine, although they aren't any where near the grand age of yours! I would say the same as Thistle and have a look at Simple Systems Feeds. If it is any help, Top Spec Anti Lam balancer is excellent, gives them all their vitamins and minerals and contains biotin which is great for their feet too.

Most of the Simple Systems feeds are fed soaked which would make it easy for your gorgeous sounding girl to eat too. They are all forage/fibre based so you could also substitute some hay/haylage for more SS feed if she finds it easier to eat.

she is doing so very well at the moment,so I want to keep her like that,and get her through the winter hopfully
the trouble is I live in south west wales and don't think there is Simple Systems Feeds here?
also I did look into this once but found you had to buy it in bulk?? is that right?love Vxxx

You say she didnt' do well on alfalfa but what else were you feeding? Cushings horses need extra help and must get the right vits and mins - Jackie will help you out there, I suspect Top Spec Anti Lam (supp AND balancer available) woudl cover much of it. Simple System and the feed above are based mainly on alfalfa hence my question about her feed last year....most horses do really well on a simple forage mix of perhaps 50:50 alfalfa and unmolassed beet, feed by eye for quantity, but the base must be the right vits and mins.

I am totally against feeding cereals and would be concerned about the "fibre pellets" in the feelgood product - they may contain bran, wheat feed, oat feed and I would not feed those to any horse with metabolic issues.

Hi V, agree with those who advise to contact Jackie. She seems to know every single feed that's on the market and to understand what the content actually IS.

I can't get Simple Systems over here either, or Top Spec, but Jaz seems to manage well on D&H balancer in soaked unmollassed sugarbeet and alfalfa pellets topped with some linseed (and some bran to re-balance the whole thing). I also give her Jackie's Vitex, Magnesium and recently some of her liver tonic. The latter seems to have helped with her 'autumnal' symptoms. The only thing I can't seem to change for the better is her long wavy coat.

Vals approach is the same as Simple System, so any unmolassed beet and alfalfa could be used, it's just that Simple System has the purest product - no added perservatives etc and the most consistent quality. interesting that D&H Ultimate is available, must tell my friend in France to see if she can get it, I know it isn't far behind TS...

about a year ago before I tried her on markways horsehage we used to drive miles looking for hay for her as she couldn't cope on most hays even if it was soacked, she only coped on this orgainc hay we found but then the farmer stopped making it and I had no chioce to try markways horsehage(thinking it would be too rich for her) but she has been fine on it, great!!! only one thing though I do have to watch if someone is selling old stock of it and where the bags have got over heated,as she can't cope with it then

Hi Veronica, I'm sure I read on a thread on here not long ago someone in Wales was going to be stocking Simple Systems feeds - but don't know which part of Wales they were in. Might be worth a trawl through to see. And even if not in the same part of Wales as you, they might let you order a smaller quantity from them than Simple Systems if you paid the carriage cost?
