I haven't been on the IHDG for ages - used to be an original poster, and now it's all changed, but I'm glad the Rainbow Bridge is still here.
We've had a very bad horsey year so far - our lovely Fell - Timmy - was kicked 3 days before Christmas, broke a leg and had to be put down. And Cobweb finally succumbed to Cushings-induced laminitis at the beginning of May. She was 19, and had been diagnosed for a year, but strangely had very few symptons. However, as soon as she got laminitis I knew it was time to call it a day - she was on quite a big dose of Pergolide anyway, which she was starting to refuse to eat - and I'd always said I wasn't going to let her linger.
The decision was an easy one to make, but living without your friend of 14 years is a whole different thing. I've managed to pack all her things away apart from her tack, which is still sitting, uncleaned, in a corner of a room at home. It sounds daft, but when I clean it, it won't smell of her any more. And I can't get used to having all this time on my hands - I even miss mucking out before work. However, at least I have the comfort of knowing that she was as well as possible until pretty much the last moment - I rode her quite soon before she got laminitis, and she managed to dump me on the local common. Cheeky to the end.

I still have Finnigans tack hanging in the conservatory so that I can touch and smell them. I have however had his saddle altered by the same saddler that made it for him to fit Arcos, sold his rugs as Arcos had none and also sold his hay bar to fellow DG types who very kindly keep in touch.
So no, not daft at all. It was over a week before his stable was touched or his current rugs were moved. In the end I couldn't Mal did.
I found myself asking my younger daughter if it was alright to come to the yard with her while she tended to Noukari.
Thankfully some very dear friends and my husband cooked up Arcos for me. There are alot of horses and ponies out there who are literally dying for the kind homes some of us offer and when the time is right, and only if you want to, one will come and ease your sense of loss and fill the void. But never are the ones who have gone before forgotten or replaced.
My deepest sympathies for your losses.
Regards Mags.
