Just had the news that my Grandad died today. I have always felt lucky to have reached the grand old age of 26 with all 4 grandparents still alive so , although it is always in the back of my mind that it is going to happen sooner or later, I am deeply shocked it has happened so soon with no warning! he was in reasonable health and fully corpus mentus and still driving at 84.
He fell asleep this afternoon (like he often does) and when she couldn't wake him my Nana rang my Dad. the paramedics were called but he had gone. they think it may have been heart failure. Yesterday he was complaining of neck pains.
Feel extremely guilty that on their last visit to my dads for my sisters birthday I was unable to see them as was busy with work. I felt at the time I should have made more of an effort as you never know how long they will be around, but we were due to see them again soon so thought it would be ok!
RIP Grandad, you were a truly great and inspirational man and a decorated war hero! and all my love to my Nana, Dad and Auntie.

Sympathy to you Gem. I adored my Grandfather, he fell asleep in the same way; it was a tremendous shock.

Thanks guys. At the moment I am just taking comfort from the fact he wont have known anything about it and died peacefully with his dignity in tact, without having deteriorated mentally or physically and without suffering a long illness! The best sort of end we can all hope for, for ourselves and loved ones.

Gem,
Sorry to hear about your grandad, my nan died in much the same way. She died 18 years ago and there is not one day when i don't think about her.
At least you can remember him as he was and not wasted by some illness.
RIP Gems grandad

So sorry to hear about your grandad. They are special aren't they ??!! I know how you feel as I felt guilty for not seeing my grandma enough after she died (even though she was in Wales and I was in Norfolk !) I did say goodbye to her a week before she went as she had refused all foods and stuff and was on her way out then I dread to think how my husband will cope. He's 35 and still has his grandparents ! They raised him as one of their own. And my husband has never lost anyone in the family YET, so he's not used to "death" yet ! (unlike me !)

Gem, so sorry to hear about your beloved Grandad. Please try not to feel guilty about not visiting him due to work. It is a natural reaction to the loss of a person that we love, to feel that we should have done more.He will know that you loved him very much and that you needed to work. Please take some comfort that he will be watching over you, and that he just went to sleep, rather than suffering. Look after your Nana, she needs you . Take Care Pamxx

Sorry to hear about your Grandad Gem, like you say though, no long illness and quietly slipping away with dignity.
