Just clicked to see who else was on here at the moment and found that by clicking on the name you can send an instant message - does this mean we can do online chats?

If it's the same facility as other similar boards it's a means of sending messages via the board rather than 'chat' in the sense of a chat room. Does mean you can keep up a conversation with someone whilst logged in and browsing though without having to leave though:)

Thank you, I think I get it. Will maybe give it a try when I'm feeling very clever!

Online chat could easily be arranged if people were keen and IH people happy with the idea. There are all sorts of 3rd party chat products, but the best is IRC (Internet Relay Chat).
IRC can be connected to via client software (most popular for Windows users is mIRC - http://www.mirc.com). Download and install and you will have access to any IRC server in the world. The software comes with a list of servers preinstalled.
A room would have to be set up on one of the servers. I have done this many times, so happy to help if desired.
A java interface can also be added to a website so that people can use the chat room without having IRC software installed on their PC. They would instead access a web page with a java applet in it.
There are IRC clients for Mac and Linux, so it is a cross platform solution.
