My horse will often rub his head on me, sometimes quite strongly. Is this a sign of affection/ bad behaviour/ or something irritating his nose? Really appreciate your thoughts.

It could be a sign of affection, or wanting attention, particularly if he has been encouraged to do this by a previous owner.
Does he have an itchy head and rub his head on other things? If he does, I would think he's just using you as a convenient rubbing post.
Alternatively it could be his way of showing that he is dominant over you.
Whichever it is, if he is moving you around I would discourage it and ask him to respect your space. Horses are big powerful animals, and need to have for respect humans, otherwise they can be dangerous. You could do this by pushing his head away every time he attempts to rub on you, shaking the lead rope at his face, halting and backing him up and putting him back at a respectful distance away from you when leading.
Good luck, enjoy your horse.

My old man rubs on me when he's happy, so I allow him to do it. I don't let my youngster do it though, as he is being a bit cocksure of himself at the moment! And also I have less hair on me that way

Its an attention thing and although it can seem like an affectionate thing it is really the horse saying "I'm here I demand you take notice of me". Watch a foal with his Mum. He will nudge her udder and get what he wants and get satisfaction. Nothing wrong with it if you keep it in check but some can get stronger and stronger until they give you a good old bang. I tell mine off because I have children here who could get hurt if it got out of hand.
