I'm looking for a herbal calmer to help my 6 year old Welsh Section D. He's calm and relaxed a lot of the time but occasionally something will upset him and he will get into a bit of a stress which sometimes escalates and other times goes away quickly.
The most frequent example of this is how he behaves in his stable. At my current yard (where we've been for 2 months) the stable block is out of view of the fields and he often gets quite upset in his stable for a number of reasons - other horses going out first, him coming in first, his favourite horse going out, horses walking around the yard, etc. He has a door which looks out onto the yard and a window out of the back too. He never gets left in on his own and always has at least two other horses either next to him or a couple of stables away in clear view but still gets anxious very quickly, sweating and running round his stable.
As I don't own or manage the yard, I've done what I can in terms of making sure the daily turn out and bring in routine helps him - ie. making sure he is never alone in the stables, but I wondered if anyone thought feeding a calmer might help him adapt to the situation a little better?
None of the other horses are upset or stressed by the set-up so I struggle to understand what makes him become the way he is I've also had him at three different locations before and never had this problem in the past.
I've had a look at herbal calmers but unsure which one might be the best and most cost-effective so any advice or recommendations would be gratefully accepted.
Similarly, if anyone else has had a horse with a similar problem I'd be really interested to hear how you've dealt with it
Thanks very much in advance,
Carys
