Hi, I just wondered if there was anyone out there who has a horse with shivers and would be willing to offer some advice/answer some questions... Many thanks in advance

I don't have one but used to look after one on the livery yard I worked on. I always thought he seemed happier when he was turned out more, come winter when their turn out was more restricted he was always unhappy.

Thanks for the reply michellep, appreciate it I am lucky enough to be able to keep mine out more or less 24/7 and definitely agree the more turn out the happier she is. She recently had an injury to her fetlock which meant box rest which really exaggerated her symptoms of shivers. I was wanting to know about supplements too. Obviously I understand there is nothing that can cure it as such, but have been advised to try a vit e and selenium supplement and wondered if anyone had experience using a specific brand etc. Or any other general advice.

Horse's range of comfort is -15 to 15 degrees (if my messed up conversion is right) but some are warm blooded... TBs and especially donkeys and Arabians. Some just get cold and don't deal well... everyone has their weakness. If a horse is cold, the best thing, I've heard, is lots of roughage, so I've been feeding mine extra Lucerne/alfalfa lately.
Its freaking cold here this weekend -27 in the middle of the Wild West, US. Yeah... I'm whining...

I don't know about vit e and selenium specifically but I do seem to remember it being suggested that a high oil diet might help with shivers.

Thanks michellep, I'm all for giving anything a try to see if it has an added benefit so will see about a high oil diet change. It's hard that so little is seemingly known about the condition!
