I loved the members board when LizP RA was doing her question/video of the week , it felt like a safe place to explore ideas. I do miss the updates on some of the DG horses too

Thanks everyone. It was such a busy place. Perhaps a re vamp like the farmers one mentioned would help. And a bit of promotion too, I know what you mean about Facebook feeling like more of a fan club.

This is the farming forum I mentioned. www.thefarmingforum.co.uk I don't post much on there, I don't know enough about agriculture, but have learned a great deal, and it always feels nice and friendly and supportive - just like the DG has always done. I know it's never going to be possible to change formats to something like this...... but it just feels more up to date and easier to use. There was a fun thread a few months ago about farm cats, and it was so easy to put up pics of my moggie!

I think Kelly said a couple of years back that the storage limit had been met (for photos uploaded directly) and it would cost her a lot more to increase it whereas linking to photobucket or similar is free and unlimited. I do wonder though if admin could delete all the oldest pics, say anything over 3 years old, if that would free up more space, but I don't know if it's possible to do a mass delete as obviously no one is going to do it individually picture by picture.

I have pretty much stopped calling in here as, there's no nice way of saying this, the forum has got a bit boring for me. The same old questions keep coming up time and again, and so many of the more experienced posters, JennyB, Varkie, Specialsparkle, Heather Moffett and many others have also stopped contributing. We used to have some very stimulating discussions with people having well thought out arguments for and against various issues. These seem to have largely disappeared now and instead we get questions where the only answer ever seems to be "Get an RA out". People seem to have gravitated to Sylvia Loch's classical riding club facebook page. It's incredibly active with a lot of animated discussions going on around a variety of topics, and although a few of them are pretty intense and heated there is some good stuff there as well. Unfortunately I think that fora are starting to be a thing of the past for many people now. Shame, as this used to be my first port of call when I wanted an internet 'horsey evening' and it was nice to share our various doings with our horses. I know that many people liked to hear about Gazdag's and Tuli's progress, but now Jenny and I share this info on our own facebook pages, as many others do.

interesting comment caroline about types of horsemanship. I was reading an interesting thread on fb about complaining to the BHS about having Jason Webb at their annual meeting. One of the comments said they also complained about Kelly and have noticed increasing attacks on Monty as well. I wonder if people are lumping monty, kelly, jason webb, parelli etc all together without actually looking at each. Also complaints that they wont give free advice over the internet!!! I know fashions in horses ebb and flow and perhaps IH is currently on a downer?

I know fashions in horses ebb and flow and perhaps IH is currently on a downer? I think there is more choice available now for people who want to take a route other than the traditional and mainstream. Personally, I went down the positive reinforcement and clicker training route and am interested in anything gentle in approach. I strive for consensual horsemanship and am interested in trainers that can help me interact with my horse in that way. Whilst there may be differences in the trainers you list, there is a common thread of use of negative reinforcement - which is a very different genre of horsemanship to positive reinforcement. In the period in which negative reinforcement training seem to have declined in popularity, I have noticed an increase on the other side of the fence. Those are all personal observations though - the real figures may be completely different. With that said, I do regularly consult an excellent RA who is very gentle in her approach, full of horse sense, innovative and creative in her approach and understands what I am aiming for and helps me get there in a positive reinforcement way. I am a massive fan of Ben Hart too. He has taught me so much and made me believe in myself as a horsewoman. That's so important. It's not enough to learn techniques - you have to develop and believe in yourself too. That's something that some other trainers don't seem to think of doing, yet it is a critical factor. One of the things that Ben Hart talks a lot about is the importance of breaking tasks and targets down into tiny steps. That is something you can apply to anything. He also talks about working on yourself before working on the horse. I applied both those ideas to getting fit and light enough to start riding my horse. I got really fit, really developed as a martial artist, lost 5 stone and in September I will be running a half marathon in aid of the bitless mules campaign in Morocco. All achieved through tiny incremental steps and a determination to get myself right for my horse. And I rode my free spirited, tricky mare for the first time last year - with the help of my lovely RA, Sarah Weston. So for me, the combination of inspirations I have found is perfect. We each find our own path and sources of learning and inspiration.

I don't think the dg being slower means a reduced popularity in the style of horsemanship. There are just so many other forms of social media now that people don't use forums as much.
The Kelly's Facebook is very busy and IH is often recommended as a solution on a number of pages where people ask for advise. IH methods are increasingly being refered to in magazines and the demo's are always very popular too.
I agree that the discussion on here tends to be far less interesting than it once was. Not because I find the horsemanship any less interesting but because there are less people on her asking new questions or raising new debates.

I think also that horsemanship issues are discussed everywhere now with all magazines having regular articles. People dont need to look for a 'specialist' forum now for like minded people as we all know far more which is good in one way as the forum has done its purpose to educate

I'm just dashing off to work with a frightened show horse so brief message - It's a fair point that one's own facebook is a bit of a 'fan page' - I can't deny that's actually very relaxing and happy making. While having to defend yourself on forums is I'm sure 'character building' and I think it has been 'good for me' (and Monty) over the years it's not always been pleasant, it can be very time consuming (so much that you think 'is this really worth it?') - maybe facebook is the lazy way out?
I understand social media is feeding us generally with 'what we think already' and protecting us from outside views. A version of reading a political party newspaper, only having friends in one political party - and never considering other views and being pretty much astounded to learn there are other views. Perhaps not good for us as a society?

I know for my part I have been ridiculously busy lately. Between 2 jobs, a horse, martial arts/personal defence classes (and studying to do my coaches course), psychology work and maybe a boyfriend (still very early days), life has gone insane. lol. I do pop on every now and again but rarely comment unless I think there is something really interesting that I would like to know more about.
It is a shame because I used to be addicted to this Board and on here all the time.
