Hope was out in the garden today with my mum & her friend, my sister & the 3 kids. A neighbour appeared & Hope started jumping up at the fence & barking (usual). My mum told the neighbour to come in - thinking she would be fine - & Hope has bitten her. It was the fleshy bit near her thumb, its punctured the skin & started to bruise instantly. Neighbour was very nice about it but I am mortified & totally shocked. She has never done this before, parents are raging as we currently live with them & obviously I have my wee one to consider...

Oh no... Does anyone tell Hope not to jump up and bark at the fence? Just wondering if anyone gave the dog a clear signal that everything was ok and not to make a fuss before inviting the neighbour in? Easily overlooked if your dog is normally fine... I only ask as our dog was very spoiled before I met OH, and I've had to pay very close attention to little details in order to correct behaviour. In doing so I've observed how often OH misses little questions and opportunities for learning, and I think this happens a lot with dogs... Hope you're ok, our dog was attacked by the dog who lives across the road yesterday and it's very upsetting. Luckily no blood shed, but I was still very shaken all the same.

Hope neighbour is ok, and everyone is still friends. Next time might be an idea to put Hope on a lead before inviting people into the garden.

Sound reasoning from jenny , hope was doing what she thinks she has to do, and it isnt so long ago she lost a friend, she feels like she is or has to be the protector, strict rules for hope will sort it, but dont use her name in training rules ,

It's very scary when such things happen, but Hope was only protecting her own. I was once bitten by a neighbours dog when I walked in ( invited! ) through the back door. The dog wasn't expecting me, was surprised and had a go. In general she was a sweet natured gentle animal, and we made friends and never had any problems again.
And Parsnip, my beloved border collie once bit a woman who jumped off a stile as my OH was waiting to climb it. Parsnip was the most gentle creature you could ever meet, but he was VERY protective of me and OH. It must have looked to him as if she was jumping on OH. Fortunately neither incident resulted in serious injury, although I did need antibiotics, and Parsnip's victim was incredibly understanding - she was the one who pointed out how it must have looked to him.
This doesn't mean Hope is an aggressive dog, she's just one who's very worried about protecting her family.

To use there name to reprimand them, then use it again for recall, then again for food, you see! I have 1 simple word for everything , I just dont thing its very clear not to, and unfair, use name in posative not negative

Thank you ladies. I feel a lot calmer about the situation now. Neighbour is okay and no fall outs thankfully she is a doggy person and she says she feels really silly for letting it get to that point. I wasn't in when it happened, she came into the garden and all my family were up on an enclosed decking, it was when she came onto the deck that it happened. I am assuming Hope was just to wound up and in protector mode. JennyB - We have had a few issues with her, she is a strange little dog & I am getting professional help with her. Usually I wouldn't invite anyone into the garden when she is loose, I think as there was so much going on my mum probably wasn't really thinking as usually we are very clear and strict with her. As you said though sometimes things are missed. Lesson learnt, hopefully it was a one off.
