My lovely Mario, who is about 30, is moulting. That's good because it's nice adn early and not delayed despite him having Cushings in theory. Anyway, the hair is coming out in handfuls. At least it is when I grab handfuls! The skin underneath is very scaly, big flakes of dandruff. The hair seems to be coming out too early in relation to the summercoat growing in, so he's bald in big areas. I do think that the worst in terms of scalyness areas are the ones that haven't been covered by his rug, so I'm wondering if it's to do with earlier wet skin & some sort of problem there. Is it a good thing, shedding coat, shedding skin etc, a sign of healing? Or is it a bad thing, showing there's something wrong? I'd welcome some advice.
He's on: Horsehage fibre, Alfabeet, micronised linseed, minerals from the balanced feed people, ground milk thistle, and (because the bag was half price and I couldnt resist) Top spec conditioning flakes. He's always had all these except the flakes (oh and with different makes of minerals) for years without this problem. He's out 24/7 in a poor 10-acre pasture.

A lot of rugged horses are getting rainscald under their rugs this winter as it has been so mild and they are sweating and damp under the rug, this can cause hair loss in handfulls and scaly bald patches. The recent warm sunny spell has only made things worse as they are starting to moult with a vengeance - all of ours have been naked for a while now.

Specialized, when you say naked - do you mean rugless - or - hairless?
I have been careful with the rugs - and leaving them off when appropriate. I'm thinking it's the areas unrugged, - face & neck mainly. They would have got repeatedly soaked in that awful weather we had.
As long as it's not something serious I shan't worry. He seems bright in himself.

Just so you know, the conditioning flakes are basically flaked soya and oats. It's not uncommon for horses to have issues with soya.

Thanks Clipclop. Do you think the skin flakes could be caused by the soya flakes? Hey - it's a bit like homeopathy! Like curing like(or makign worse)! Surely Topspec wouldnt be selling stuff that could harm? I'm confused as ever!

His moult is consistent with a Cushingoid horse I'm afraid to say. Coat coming out in handfuls, bald patches etc are all symptoms of Cushings - and likely to be advanced Cushings. Still as your horse is 30 this is not a surprise! Changing feeds etc is very unlikely to make any difference.

Oh thanks lisap - I didn't realise that. I haven't been reading much about Cushings lately - must do so again.

No, ~I can't find anything anywhere that says this moulting style of Mario's is typical of Cushings! Mario is looking lovely now, rejuvenated in his premature summer coat!
