It's not just Tesco, most supermarkets seem to be affected, 3 processing plants are involved - 2 in Ireland 1 in England. I expect it will be the suppliers to the processing plants that are to blame.

Very bad taste, but just heard on Radio 2 that "hamburger" is an anagram of "Shergar bum" !

Of course in the US they eat hamburgers made from 100% beef.

I must admit to a certain cynicism in this - is the the fact that the burgers had a meat other than beef in them, or that it was horse meat, which we in this country traditionally do not eat? And if it was concern about eating horse meat, what do they think goes into many of the dried meats from the contintent such as salumi (plural of salami, for those who think it's a mis-type!), pastrami, sausages etc - and when they buy their dog a tin of Beef dog food that says 'Beef flavour - at least 5% beef' what do they think makes up the rest of the meat in there?

Very true LuckyRed, but the point of the checks was to ensure correct labelling and prevent fraud - it is the press that have focussed on the horse meat and brushed over the pig meat element so they can sensationalise the emotional side. I never knew the plural of salami - that is my fact for the day.

That's why I don't eat any of that rubbish and my dogs eat proper meat. I don't object to horses being eaten but the products should be labelled as such so you have a choice in it. I haven't eaten burgers for a long time- I get meat free ones- cos they're just full of crap anyway so it's not really a big surprise.

As people have mentioned it's more a question of correct labelling. People should be able to know what they are eating. If someone if ethically against eating horse meat then that is their perogative and they should be accurately informed. The pork thing is equally shocking as many people don't eat pork for religious reasons but wouldn't expect pork to be included in a burger where the meat is listed as beef. Personally I'm a vegetarian and would hope that tescos aren't also slipping horse in the vegi burgers and labelling it as "meat substitute"
