Hi All,
I'm planning to go to Ireland on a riding holiday later in the year and I'm looking at the options for Sports Travel Insurance.
I'll be going abroad (admittedly it is only a short hop over to Ireland, but it'd involve flights / ferries to get home again), travelling alone and I'm planning to do some exciting cross-country training, so I reckon it'd be a good idea to have something sorted in case of accident or emergency.
I wondered if you nice people had any recommendations or warnings to share? Google is giving me too many options!
Laura

My favourite option is Crossogue Equestrian in Co. Tipperary, with the Slieve Aughty Riding Centre in Co. Galway coming in second.

I think when I went to Portugal I just got normal trsvel insurance from Endsleigh, I double checked with them and riding was included in the sports allowed.

Some of the policies I've looked at cover Horse Riding but exclude Horse Jumping. Quickly tiring of reading all that small print, but quite tickled to find out I'm not covered for climbing on the outside of a building to another part of that building, unless my life is in danger or I am attempting to save another human life!

If you pay for the trip on your credit card, you might already have built in insurance. I'm not sure how it works in the uk, but we have people travel here to the Isle of Man from Ireland and they are liable for all hospital charges from the moment they are moved from A&E to a ward for care/treatment (the same as all other EU countries, UK excluded). The main cost that bites people is repatriation to the UK/Ireland/EU.
The best companies I have dealt with are the various credit card companies that have insurance attached and europ-assistance (who I think are now called aria-assistance).

ladynowak - Repatriation was my main concern. I'll have to check out what cover I might already have on my credit card.
June - BUPA is a good shout, I hadn't even thought of that and I already have BUPA medical cover from work.

Quick update: BUPA covers horse riding but excludes jumping, so'd have to make sure I injured myself well away from any jumps! I'm liking the look of www.dogtag.co.uk/ if only because it very clearly states that it covers you doing all kinds of extreme sports. Maybe use it as a top-up to whatever normal stuff I already have via the credit card and the like. Helpfully, my Mum suggested I should be looking more at the life insurance end of things, covering permanent disablement and long term nursing care. Thanks Mum!

hi - I got some special riding insurance for a riding holiday a couple of years ago, that was recommended to me by the holiday company. I will have a trawl through and see if i can find the company it was with. Can't quite remember if it covered jumping though. MTA - Just checked - it is sportscover direct. You would need to check about the jumping. Sounds a great holiday anyway!

How bizarre. Bupa covers polo so that's really weird that they don't cover jumping!

Sportscover Direct will cover jumping. They'll even cover competitions overseas as long as you tell them about it in advance. They also do a top-up policy, so if you have an existing policy which covers everything except the jumping, they'll just cover the activity for you
