Hi, Does anyone have any advice on separation anxiety? Bit of a long story... but I moved my two horses (geldings) to a new small yard back in September, they had settled in brilliantly, there was no other horses on the yard (only 4 stables) just a few donkeys in the neighboring paddock. My friend bought her two horses (mares) to the yard about 6 weeks later. Initially there was no problems. Now.. my little pony is having issues when the the other two horses leave the field, even though they do not share a field but can see each other from a distance, he paces along the fence line, calls and has started running through the fence. Its getting to the point where it is dangerous and its really worrying me. PLus he hasn't even had much contact with them. He has had separation issues before but only with his buddy who is still with him. I know he isn't keen on the donkeys but after a few days he was fine. Please any advice, or previous experience, ideas, etc I can't think of what i can do to help

My pony's separation anxiety got worse after I changed from feeding Spillers pony nuts, to the feed merchants own brand, but I didn't make the connection until I started feeding magnesium oxide. The separation anxiety disappeared virtually overnight. Spillers' nuts have mag ox in them, the own brand don't, and he clearly needs it.
These days he has mag ox every day, he still likes to have company, but is OK without. Mag ox is also good for the feet, and he has very poor feet.
Good luck!

How weird, my pony was on the spillers high fiber cube before, he is now has speediebeet over winter. Didn't think it would make a difference in him as never has before. Have been thinking of feeding mag ox, now I will definately give it a try Thanks! Fingers crossed it helps him !

Sorry no advice but I am interested in the Spillers horse feeds. Mine have horse and pony cubes but thought I'd look at the contents for the high fibre cubes. It doesn't list magnesium so checked the horse and pony cubes and again magnesium not listed but it clearly states on the bag they contain it though I add magnesium anyway as mine have such a small amount it wouldn't provide enough to make a differance. It would be interesting to know exactly how much magnesium is in their feeds.

I remember that when magnesium was the new buzz word Spillers brought out their new improved Cool Mix with Magnesium. Maybe it has been so successful they have put it in the cubes as well. I always remember back in the day when I fed mixes that their Cool Mix was said to be the same make up as the cube in museli form. Goes to show with feed you get what you pay for - you cant make good feed cheaply

I note you say that it is mares leaving that upsets your boy - could he be a little riggy? One of the horses on our yard cannot be turned out near mares, as he gets upset. He is fine with geldings. Just a thought Hope you get it sorted xx

My mare suffers badly with separation anxiety. Have started her on Magnesium too as she was also a nervous wreck. She too is so much better behaved on the Magnesium.

Pro earth are also on ebay, not sure who would be the better price but check the grade as they vary from quite low to, I think, 97% pure pharmacetical grade. I give mine a tiny amount really, about 5g but their feet seem better and Lady is still a scaredy cat but much less so, also if you add a small amount of sodium, I think about a tablespoon it helps their body absorb the magnesium.

Hi all, Just an update. My lil pony has been on a magnesium oxide supplement for about 1 1/2 weeks now, and what a difference. He is happier in the field with his buddy and isn't worried about where the others are anymore, he still has a little neigh but nothing compared to before. Very pleased, plus he even lead a hack for part the way, which is very good for him . Thanks for all your advice! X
