I know a few people would like to know how the babes are getting along. They're fine. Excaliber got in with Sunny one day last week, not sure how or why, because he won't tolerate Sunny near him, and double barrels him. Sunny seems fine despite this. Sunny is eating pony nuts with a bit of readigrass now, whereas Excaliber is still on readigrass with a few nuts thrown in. I wormed them with Panacur Guard last week and saw very few worms come out, so the egg counts were accurate. I did some leading work with them today. Sunny was very good as he tends to follow me anyway! So I decided to turn him out onto the lawn, his first time on grass since he arrived 3 weeks ago. Naturally he immediately started eating the ivy on a tree! He did settle to grazing the lawn after a few minutes until he heard the sound of a feed bin! FOOD? Excaliber hasn't quite got the idea of being led, but was very calm and quiet to work with. I tried to lead him out of the corral, but he doesn't walk forwards yet, only at angles so wouldn't follow me out through the gateway. He did enjoy a good scratch though. I picked up each back foot 3 times by squeezing the tendon. I had to wait several minutes for a response, but he did pick the foot up eventually, and in a calm relaxed manner.

Sunny is just so cute! It's great to hear how they are getting on. It was good to be at the workshop to understand the steps involved in leading/picking up feet etc. I bet sunny enjoyed his first trip out in the garden!

Gorgeous looking boys x When I teach my foals to lead I always have a bottom "rope" and one to the head it helps keep them straight, if desesitised to the bottom they take it really well and lead like troupers really quickly x

That's how I taught Tor to lead, and he caught on very quickly. I have a got line long enough so when I next have time to work with them, I will use it. I'm sure once he realises that he goes out to eat grass when he follows me, he'll catch on quickly too!

Oh I just love those last two pictures Sunny looks such a cheeky little chap and it's great to see Excalibur really enjoying a good scratch I'd love to say I would come and help with leading them but I'm just so busy this weekend. Are you free any days next week? I could possibly come over Monday, Thursday or Friday if that's not too late to be any use.

There was a lot of rain over night here, 2" standing in the empty feed bowls this morning! This is what the foals looked like:- Excaliber Sunny! They've got a nice big dry shelter with a straw bed in it, why, oh, why are they looking like drowned rats? Oh I just love those last two pictures Sunny looks such a cheeky little chap and it's great to see Excalibur really enjoying a good scratch I'd love to say I would come and help with leading them but I'm just so busy this weekend. Hi Michelle, I think I'll be busy with family on Monday, but Thursday or Friday would be good, as I'll be loading them into the trailer to take them up to the field about then. Any extra horsey people will be most welcome, so if you're free maryanne, marychick, alonerawnut and/or Sophie, you'd be most welcome. I'm sure we'll have plenty of christmas fare to offer you for your trouble. I hope this rain lets up though, otherwise I won't be able to drive into the field to turn them out.

They are strange creatures. Ours lives out as she developed a dust allergy & one very wet & horrible day when I went down to feed them, she was quite happy standing out in the pouring rain -leg rested & rain dripping off her forelock despite a nice warm shelter she could use! (she eats her food in there happily enough). Sometimes she is even lying down in the pouring rain! Ooo I would love to help on thurs/fri but have to work we are off on Holiday straight after the new year so I'm doing the work Christmas cover. Hope it goes well & dries out a bit before then!

Oh what a pity, maryanne and marychick. Work always gets in the way of what we want to do, doesn't it. As the rain has stopped the sun has come out, I did a bit of leading work with the foals this morning. Sunny followed me out onto the lawn, and then went for a bit of a hoon around before getting down the the serious business of eating. He likes to browse on ivy and brambles more than grass!!! I do need a bowl of pony nuts to lead him back into the corral with. I did some more leading work with Excaliber in the corral, this time with a line around his bum. He accepted having the line there without any adverse reaction. He was walking forwards more freely today, but I couldn't get him to walk out of the corral. He has an interesting habit of, quite often, reversing into a fence before pooing. He filled his water bucket last night: Yuck!!! He doesn't seem to be rubbing his bum particuarly, but he LOVES having his dock scratched. I can't see any signs of lice or pin worms, the panacur guard should have sorted out any pin worms anyway, shouldn't it? It is wonderful to have two such lovely unspoilt foals, they really are a delight to own and work with. They don't seem to have any hang ups about humans at all, and accept direction without any question of fear.

Hi Sophie, be lovely to see you again, and have help loading them into the trailer. I'm looking forward to turning them out in the field.
I had a good leading and feet picking up session with them today. They are both following me around the corral and stopping when I stop. I've started asking for back up too, and getting it. The feet picking up is going well, they are responding quite quickly now, even with their front feet which I didn't expect.
MTA. Sarah and I have settled on Saturday April 13th for another workshop with my ponies, so if you're interested in joining in, please let me know on here, or by pm.
