I love the big chap Garry linked from Barnsby horses - I looked at him when I was looking for one in the summer but I was out of their criteria People really do need to stop breeding grr.

Why were you out of their criteria?! Feel free to say its non of my buisness, but just seems madness really when you have one horse already thats obviously well cared for.

we out of their criteria as we don't use a registered farrier. If livery came to me with a horses from bransby it would be REALLY tricky to find a farrier for just the one trim!
In the past ( where we were based before) we were out of blue cross criteria because whilst we had a field shelter it did not have any electricity! and battery operated lights were not considered good enough!
sometimes it is purely distance.
I think sometimes the charities criteria and donation policies can be too much. I do understand they need to take precautions but ........

No wonder so many places are over flowing. I asked purley because my mum got refused a dog recently and I was wondering if they had crazy requirments for horses as well. Clearly they do.

Id want the horse barefoot - would have to be a bl00dy good reason why not(!) and use a ukhncp trimmer not a registered farrier. I also use a HM saddle which wouldnt be fitted by a qualified saddler. I also have barbed wire near the horse as my rented land is stock fenced - the fact its surrounded by dykes/woodland meaning there is no reason for a horse to want to go near it wouldnt have made much difference PS thankyou for the well cared for comment Wills

It strikes me you could pop along to a local sale and buy a "rescue" a darn sight cheaper than rehoming one from the RSPCA without the hassle of ridiculous rules and red tape but then you would be accused of fostering the indiscriminate breeders. The rescue people make me very annoyed with the silly criteria they use we were refused a dog in spite of someone being here 24/7 in a new house with 6ft fences and very experienced dog owners Why because we have cream carpets We have cream carpets because we had a golden retriever who sadly had died a year previously and we got the carpet to match her hair colour so you couldnt see where she had been lying

The term 'rescue' is a confusing one... very loose.

I got turned down by the WHW and a local horse charity because I couldn't have 3, yup because if you ride one one is not allowed to be left on it's own.
I would never leave a horse behind stressed but no they wouldn't even consider me. When I said I couldn't afford 3 horses they were really quite off with me. I explained that 3 is difficult to manage as I only have a 2 horse trailer so one would always be left behind but they didn't get the irony. Instead I bought another one and funny I have always had 2 and no problems at all, I ride one lead the other or ride one in fields close by then the other can see her and so on, but no matter what I said I just didn't meet their criteria.
It was such a shame I had a lovely home to offer and was hapy to take a companion only horse and even some minor medical issues, but no I was refused.
This was a few years ago so not sure if things have changed as it put me off fo much I have never been back.

Then get involved and change things...................email/letter writing campaign, lobbying members etc. These organisations often have a power thing going on but in reality the power lies with the donating public.

Yes, I agree. Ot ask to speak to someone higher up in the organisation. We were initially refused a rescue dog, after having one previously for 15 years, as we didn't have 6ft fences. (We live on a smallholding of 8 acres!) When I chatted with someone more senior, he came to visit us and the decision was reversed. In fairness, they need guidelines to ensure the long term welfare for all their animals, but those guidelines should be flexible in line with 'common sense' You just need to alter your approach to the organisation in question in order to get the response you require

I got refused 2 yard cats from cats protection, they were advertised as feral and i said that i would like to stroke them. This caused uproar as once you stroke them their not classed as feral and have to live in a house. Some how i considered the lifestyle i could offer them better than the alternative.
