My mare is out in her field which is ten mins away from the yard. The whole farm is frozen and i mean really really frozen.... Im worried about her being out but the track up is just a big thick sheet of ice. She seems perfectly happy, access to shelter and unlimited supply of hay. Tell me I'm doing the right thing by leaving her out? The thought of trying to lead her in terrifys me as she can be quite spooky walking up to the yard.

As long as she has hay, shelter and water she will be fine.

Leave her out, with plenty of hay and water. She will be much safer, she will know how much or little movement she can acheive. I wouldn't even think of leading a spooky horse on an icy track, that is asking for trouble and safety comes above comfort in the priorities.

I would leave her out. I wouldnt risk bringing her in on sheet ice. As specialized said, as long as she has enough to eat and has shelter she will be fine x

Thanks mind now at rest. She has been out for 3 days in it now, I wasn't up until today and couldn't believe how bad it was... Everyone else brought in except me and her field mates, glad that others feel the same way as I do. She isn't best pleased but she will just have to cope as physically she is fine.

I think in a way mine preferred the frozen ground last week to the mud, mainly because I gave then a bit extra hay ;D. I agree with everyone else, much safer to leave her than risk one or other or both of you going down on the ice.

When my OH's horse died nearly 2 years ago we couldn't bring my old boy back because the road (all 50 yrds) was sheet ice. We couldn't bring him home for over a week. He did call bless him but you should see the silly old git today. She will be fine and I bet she gets extra fuss when you go to see her.

Yes, mine stay out when it's really frosty, my yard gets quite slippy so it's just not worth bringing them in. They seem happy enough although I know one of them will be very happy to come back in.

Better to be stuck out than stuck in imo.
Far too many people keep them in for days (unable to get out of stables at all due to ice) and then they go nuts and injure themselves when allowed back out.

Agree with everyone, she'll be no worse off for being out - even if the weather's really crappy she has food & shelter so she'll be fine
