Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there can give me some advice. I have a 30yr old thoroughbred/cob who thinks she's 2yrs old!!! I don't ride her anymore but would like to lead her out. However my dilemma is that she can be a handful when led i.e. goes round in circles and can be hard to hold on to. she is not like this all the time just when she gets excited. I have had an operation on my arm and can not afford to get trampled or hurt but would like to give her a good quality of life and change of scenery. She is not a nasty horse is quick to learn, honest and a pleasure in all other ways. She unnerves me when she starts and I would like to conquer this problem. My question is has anyone else had the same or similar problems and how did you overcome it. I am thinking of investing in the Dually halter which seems a good training aid. Any Advice appreciated. Many thanks to any replies.

Hi there My girl is sometimes like that too - I've no idea why but she just gets it on her to get mad excited sometimes, and she throws her head about and tries to run round me. Obviously this is not good when you don't want to play and have to keep close to lead them! She did it the other night so I went out the field, clipped her on over the fence & led her with the fence between us, she was good as gold then. Otherwise, I find staying calm and standing still while she has a prance works best - usually a few feet away! (I always have her on a long line as routine). Maybe you have a safe space like a school or corral you could take her in first, where you can stay safe and let her get the playfulness out of her system before you take her out? A Dually would be a good investment - if you haven't used one before, do make sure you have it on right... sorry to sound patronising but they do have to be done up a certain way
