My 14.1 cob pony has recently been retired due to muscle atrophy causing her to seriously trip. I thought she had Cushings and got her tested but she was 26 which is normal. She has also been drinking loads and weeing loads but this has turned out to be a urinary tract infection and she is now on antibiotics. I had her shoes removed last Weds and tonight she is very lame on both front feet. She's not too bad in a straight line, lame but not hobbling but on the turn both ways very lame.
I will speak to my vet tomorrow but does anyone here have experience of how long it takes after removing shoes for them to be sore? It's been a week now. I have known ponies that go lame immediately after losing a shoe. She is not on stony ground, it is just rubber matting, bit of concrete yard and then mud basically! If it is as her shoes have been removed is she likely to improve or do I need to get them put back on?

There are loads of threads to search on here relating to removing shoes and conditioning for barefoot. Has she had a trim as well or just had the shoes taken off? Most horses will be footy for a period after shoes are removed, the period will vary from horse to horse and dependent on the condition of the hoof and the general management. Diet is one of the most critical factors and she may need some sort of hoof protection short-term.

Thank you Specialized - dopey me completely forgot I can search for topics - DUH!!! I spoke to my vet today who said it can take a couple of months for the hoof to harden. She was a bit better today so fingers crossed. Thank you.
