I bought a nice avocado based mane detangler/conditioner for Beauty - who had managed to get her mane very gunky with mud and oils. I gave it a shampoo wash and then used the avocado spray. It was about £20 for a very large spray bottle. It was pretty good - not as obvious as the silicon spray, but I thought it might be more natural for her. I was a bit concerned that it might make the mane a target for Dolly to snack on though! (Fortunately that didn't happen)

I have one by NAF which was about £10 for 750mls but works economically - and what is more works brilliantly on Red's huge mane & tail.

people talk about pig oil, and I don't know what it is so I googled and found this "Pig oil is a soft white semisolid fat obtained by rendering the fatty tissue of the hog also called lard. Lard was commonly used in many cuisines as a cooking fat or shortening, or as a spread similar to butter. Lard is also useful as a cutting fluid in machining; its use in machining has declined since the mid-20th century as other specially engineered cutting fluids became prominent." So pig oil is lard? I use lard for frying & for making pastry.

No it's not lard. It's a mineral oil similar to baby oil. Called pig oil because it was originally used on pigs to stop their skin cracking!

I thought it was liquid paraffin like the laxative not the stuff you put in lamps Just read the directions for use and I would be scared to death to use it on my horses. Not for consumption get medical help if consumed irritant to eyes irritant to skin dispose of spills by sand and professional disposal

If pig oil is made of pigs, does that mean baby oil is made from babies?

I do pretty ponies being a showing person at heart and I don't do dirty ponies....
Mine are hairy natives and they live out 24/7 but never stay dirty if I can help it! Cleaning is bonding time for me and they appear to like their clean living lifestyle...... It's all for comfort, convenience and quickness as far as I'm concerned, I want to spend winter enjoying them and not scraping off 3 inches of muck before I ride etc.
They are clipped out because they continue to work hard through winter, rugged accordingly but never over rugged, tails plaited with tail bags over the top, have their legs covered in baby oil or pig oil whichever I have and their manes done with EA Magic Sheen or Seven Day Mud Away, they stay clean all winter in this regime - LOL!

I like tails to be swishable for their sake, and mud-dreads makes them like flying bullets! I find mud makes manes & tails very dry & brittle but the oil stops breakage - I wonder if it's because of the clay or limestone content.

It's the ringlets I have problems with - I can spend an hour brushing then through, add some sort of product but they are back next day. Who knows how to keep them from ringletting themselves up again?
