Hi This seems like the right place to post on this concern. I have purchased a youngster, not quite a rescue but bit of an unknown history. Should make about 14.hh. Anyway he hasn't been handled much and is a bit panicky. I am slowly working with this, building up his trust first. I just feel that I am going to get hit on the head with him . In my conscious mind I am not aware of him doing anything particular I just feel I should be wearing my riding hat even when I go out to give him a small feed and not even handle him. The only thing that I am aware of is I came off when riding a few years ago and had slight concussion plus a very sore head for a few weeks. Not worked with horses much since then. Is protection of the head area the same with everyone? Thanks

Normal ?.....do not be concerned. Just do what it takes to feel safe and to be safe, that way you have a chance to enjoy.

if you feel like wearing a helmet -- wear one -- it is posisble your unconscious is remembering hte concussoin and saying stay safe - -it is also possible your unconscious is picking up subtle signals from him and also saying satay safe -- so why not stay safe and wear the hat?
congrats on the horse acquisition and enjoy him!

I too have a 'rescue' he was in a bad relationship, owner hated him because he couldn't do her precious dressage ( bad back, sore teeth & tilted pelvis but that's another thread) and she would whip hip into a lather, lovely girl! Anyway, he has paired with my mare and gets terrible separation anxiety if he thinks she's leaving the field and he's staying. When he gets reaallly anxious I leave him in the field and ........ Yes, go and get my hat on he prances about whinnying and spinning and often clunks my head with his, not intentionally but I still hurts........ So absolutely YES if a little voice inside is saying "put a hat on" then please listen and put a hat on. Well done choosing a better life for him, stay safe and enjoy xx

if you feel you should wear your hat then wear it! the important thing is how you feel and if you feel safer wearing your hat then do it. enjoy your horse, your way! xx

Thank you for your thoughts, I do agree something is telling me to wear it, I have not heard this voice before so maybe I am picking up on a signal. I will put my stupid pride to the side and wear it.

Hey! I have had my horse from a wild rising 2 year old, and even though he will be 5 in March next year, I still wear my hat during most interactions with him! Even when everyone else at the yard has looked at me like I am some sort of nutter, I have been there when he's swung his head around and nearly knocked me out! But my trusty hat has been there to save the day.
If something is telling you to wear it then to be honest, go with it. If it serves no other purpose than to help reassure you, in the long run that will be a calmer happier you.

hi moss!
Yes definitely do wear your hat. It is really sensible with a youngster, I always wear one when handling my 17 month old (outside his stable anyway)- he has so much energy and it could go in any direction!

When I bought my weanling I wore my hat whenever I was near him, he wasn't unhandled but he was an unpredictable youngster in a new home an was understandably stressed and fearful. He is now 3.5 and although I don't think he would ever purposefully hurt me and we have a great relationship I still wear a hat whenever I think I might need one (loading, teaching something new, long reining, lunging) If you feel safer in a hat then wear one

I often wear my hat around the horses, whether I'm riding, handling or not. It's not uncommon for me to wear my body protector too. Whatever makes me feel safe.
I know what you mean about a little nagging feeling telling me to put them on. Never ignore that voice. It only takes a few seconds to put a hat on, and one day it might turn out to be the best thing you ever did.
