I had the vet out for Ellies vaccinations yesterday and got chatting about Ellie seasons. Ellie is pretty regular with them but just come into a particularly gross season over the weekend. The vet was a little concerned about the time of year and recommended Regumate. Ill be totally honest. I cant afford it this side of xmas. Its not the cheapest stuff. We ruled out a tumor because her seasons are very regular and we ruled out a marble because she has had a foal and things might not be very tight in there.
My question. Is there anything else I can try or do you know of anywhere I can get it a bit cheaper?

Hi rugrat, I had my mare on Hormonise for a while. It is made in the UK, is much cheaper than Regumate and is made from natural products. I was put off Regumate due to the fact that you have to wear gloves and be sooo careful handling it which made me question whether I wanted to put something like that "in" my mare.

Have you tried a high dose of straight Agnus Castus? It's the main ingredient in all hormonal supplements including the above Hormonise. Has never failed on mine or any others that i have recommended it to, very versatile herb.

Porcine Regumate is the same thing. If you have a pig or know someone who does then the vet can prescribe it for the pig.

I second pony nutt Pig Regumate is EXACTLY the same thing as that produced for Equines, and it used to be considerably cheaper, though of course, I haven't used it for 3 or 4 years. You would have to find out the dosage for a horse though, I can't remember.

Get a vet who is onside and they sort it all out for you. It must be worth the serious breeders having a pet pig

Buy a pig, get the prescription then eat the pig. Surely you know a farmer who could get some for you? It is used routinely in pigs to bring them all into season together so that the inseminator chap can do them all in one day and the pigs farrow in batches to suit producers timescales. It is very easy for pig farmers to get hold of they dont need a call out usually.

Hi Rugrat, I really feel for you as it is not easy trying to come up with the best option. No it didn't stop her seasons it just seemed to take the edge off so that she wasn't a grumpy maniac out to kill She was also on Mighty Mag. I took her off it after about 18-24 months as circumstances changed, both with her and her management etc. Her "bad ones" happen so rarely now that they have become a non-issue.

Ellie doesnt get stroppy. She can be a bit extra spooky but its partly the mess and partly because it cant be good for them all the time.

Our mares are in season later this yr than the last. I think the mild winter start didn't help. Had one urinating as we walked her past another mare two days ago !

If you try the agnus castus I'd recommend getting a liquid one. We got some for Henry and the poweder version is the only thing I ever saw him refuse to eat. I tried putting the tiniest amount in (literally a pinch) and he hated it as even that tiny bit made his whole feed stink. The liquid was much more palatable.
