So mum has just booked her first holiday for many years.. she's off to Arizona with DG's Arizona AKA Shelagh! So I know full well whats going to happen... she's going to want a quarter horse! lol Is it possible for heavy horses to be schooled to the 'western' way? I've been googling but without much success! One is Clydesdale x and the other is a persheron x So those of you who have western horses... is it possible or a crazy idea??

A friend of mine has two HW cobs and before getting into endurance (yes, her cobs do endurance!), she was riding them western. Very grand they looked too!

It is possible for any horse to be schooled/ridden western as it is a training method. If you are wanting to go further and compete then obviously a heavy horse would not be particularly suitable for reining or some of the other disciplines that require a bit more precision, but for a style of riding you can't beat it for being 'at one' with the horse in a really relaxed way.

Sounds fab I'd love to do some Western with my cob. We had a couple of taster lessons before she went lame, and had a really good time.

I've seen plenty of cobs ridden western, they look great. At local shows they have done reining and barrel racing. It is also becoming easier to get a saddle for a larger horse. In the states not all the western ridden horses are quarterhorses, they are a real mix.

Od dear, you'll come back wanting to be a cowgirl! And if the shop is open! The Christmas show is on Sunday and they will not all be quarter horses there. Do go if you can.

K8 I used to ride my welshy Jess western, didn't do a lot but had the western saddle (couldn't find a western bridle to fit her huge head (she was in an extra full bridle across her brow etc, short but very wide head lol), it was fab. used to hack her out in the western saddle and it was like an arm chair, did neck reining etc so yes, it is possible and great fun you can start the basics in english tack anyway, using the neck reining/light contact etc

Quite a few people who like to compete do western and english, if our little school hadn't gone to mush was going to try our western arab in english stressage! rl our arab has a large head, she is a big arab, so OH rides her in a one eared bridle.

Can you retrain a English trained horse to western? If you think about it, Kate, the horse has no idea what style of riding you're doing. He just learns that when you do X he should do Y. You'd have to make sure that you don't have duplicate commands and that be very clear and consistent, but otherwise it should be quite possible for you to do it. I'd love to see Lea doing those spins!
