There don't appear to be any conclusive reports around - most say there MAY be effects or there MAY be benefits, but there is nothing based on recent scientific studies relating to the small amounts usually supplemented. There is evidence that anaemia can occur with incredibly high amounts fed, but most supplements will cause health problems if fed at high enough levels.

Interesting statement - is there any recent evidence to back this up? I have known this for some time, but I don't know where the evidence is. Garlic is a natural antibacterial, hence the concern for gut bacteria. This is the reason I don't feed it. Here's one article by a vet. www.equisearch.com/horses_care/nutrition/feeds/eqgarlic528/

I let my experts decide. I put my (donated) bucket of garlic granules out for them to self medicate if they needed it. None of them touched it. In the days when I did supplement with it (trying for a fly repellant in an itcher) I didn't find any benefits so not worth the risk IMO.

I won't feed garlic either... good idea on giving them a choice to self medicate like Jill did... if the garlic was needed it would be eaten.

But if you read the reports from the 70s where horses were grazed in fields that had wild alliums growing they would in fact eat the leaves quite readily - even to the point of anaemia, but that is surely different to eating the bulbs. I must admit we used to supplement with garlic years ago but did not notice any effect either way when they were on it or once they were taken off.
