Hope you can help, Floyd has Cushings so is on a low sugar, low starch diet. He's on Fast Fibre with some mint, garlic & Linseed but little toad won't eat it!!
Going to try him on Speedibeet, see if he'll eat that and maybe get some nice herbs to mix in but anyone else have any suggestions? Can he have Alfa-A?
Thanks,
Lesley x

Fast fibre usually goes down well? Think that speedibeet is probably a good idea..

Mine hate fast fibre, the greedy mare will eat it but the others just play with it, I gave up in the end and they get safe and sound and d&h high fibre cubes even the cushings pony

I had the same problem with Taylor this summer, he also has Cushings. We started feeding him omega rice instead of cooked linseed, and Formula for Feet instead of naf biotin, and he licks the bowl clean now. He now has ad lib 'old' grass.
The Cushings probably started in 2003, when he had his first bout of Laminitis, and he's been on pergolide since 2005, which has kept him well. Over the past few years he's lost condition in the winter, but put it back on in the summer, but not this summer, and I'm having trouble keeping weight on him, which seems a bit strange for Cushings!

If he has just started on pergolide, that depresses the appetite for a week or two. He will get back to normal after that

I also have this problem with my 30 year old who has been on Prascend for 6 months. He won't touch Fast Fibre or Speedibeet. I soak Top Spec Cool Condition cubes to a mash which he mostly eats. He has the mash as a carrier for supplements.

Thanks for all your replies, these horses & ponies are a real worry aren't they!!
Tried adding herbal tea (not in the bags obviously) into the feed - he ate a bit but then turned his nose up again little toad!!
Just bought him some Speedibeet and Dengie Alfa-A unmollased, see if that will work.
He's been on Prascend since August and has really perked up a lot since being on it but he's been very quiet over the past couple of days and didn't eat much of his hay last night. Now with the taps all frozen up, soaking the hay is going to be an added worry!!
Will let you know how I get on! Good luck with all your horses and ponies too!

Dont add garlic! It kills off the good bacteria in the stomach..... You can always add grated swede, fennel seeds, spearmint, tumeric, fenugreek etc

Have you tried apple cider vinegar?
Apple juice is often an easy way to make a feed nice, but I don't know if the sugar content would counteract what you are trying to achieve in terms of a low sugar feed. I used it to get Beauty to eat feeds with bute in when she had her accident earlier in the year

Fast fibre already has garlic in it so you shouldn't need to feed more. Mind you... he wont eat it will he. lol Have you tried adding micronised linseed? That makes feeds palatable for most horses. Of course there is always one. lol
If the speedibeet doesn't do the trick try some Spillers hi fi cubes soaked, I've read lots will eat them.

Thanks for all your tips! Tried FF without the extra garlic! Have tried the micronised linseed. Thought about cider vinegar but worried about the sugar.

Spearmint is supposed to be a good appetiser, although I can't confirm because when I needed it for Sabria it was the Pergolide effect and she picked up anyway

Dont add garlic! It kills off the good bacteria in the stomach..... Interesting statement - is there any recent evidence to back this up?
