Sodium hydroxide is a natural chemical so I wouldnt be put off by it either and you are right it does combine with stomach acid to produce water and salt but I would also guess that unless you fed large quantities it would make little difference to the strength of the stomach acid. I use it to feed my natives as it is easy and they love it I do add a little sugar beet and calm and condition to it though all of which are soaked feeds so they get plenty liquid as they wont eat wet hay.
