A little background..... have had my pony 7 years, he was/is a nervous nelly who can jump at his own shadow.. spent about year getting him to trust me, then very very slowly broke him in and he was a star and apart from jumping and leaping at scary leaves, rabbits, twigs snapping, he did nothing nasty. At the time we lived on a farm so had plently of space to ride him without going near a road, then we had to move and couldnt ride him without going on a road, so he had a very long holiday as its just not safe to take him on the road, then he got ill which further extended his holidays.
2 years ago i got my own field so could start riding again but i just couldnt bring myself to do it... i really really wanted to but i just couldnt make myself get on... my friend offered me her super safe and steady horse but i found any excuse not to ride that aswell
Anyway, today my ponies 4 year holiday has come to an end... you could see him groan when the saddle appeared (although hes spooky and silly he is also unbelieveably lazy and would far rather just be spoilt and cuddled) lead him round the field and after he got over the trauma of the hedge rustling and finished snorting, prancing and spinning
I lined him up next to the mounting block/tree stump and he stood there while i wibbled and wobbled and dithered about whether this was such a good idea and finally i got on, he just stood there and turned to chew my foot. After much hugs and telling him he was fantastic, decided it might be a good idea to move... he didnt agree and continued to stand like a rock. So got off led him to the other end of the field faced him back towards his stable got on again, and he happily set off in the direction of the carrots once we were moving i checked if the steering and brakes still worked.. which they did so we did a lap of the field and then got off and hugged him some more ;D
Considering he hasnt been ridden in 4 years he was fantastic and didnt put a foot wrong, only shooting sideways once when a person walked past on the other side of the hedge but he does that anyway hehehe
Am very happy and quite proud that I eventually did it and even more proud of him for being so good
xx
