Thank you all for the lovely comments! You may not be surprised I did all the IH courses about a million years ago and all our horses are trained to do everything they do the IH way. Thank you Kelly & Monty x

Just search for Flying Foxes Side Saddle to get some of their videos - but I can't access via that link either - or check out their website and Facebook page too. If Lady Legover (!) comes back on, I'd love to know whereabouts you are based as most of the events previously seem to be in the Herts/Beds/Essex area. Events booked all around England for this year though!

I hate watching side saddle riders jump The horses always looked fairly pissed off about it. Ears back, hollow and uncomfortable. Well thats what i see when I look at pictures and clips of side saddle jumping. I do love to watch them in show classes though

I saw this first time round and it was terrific! P-N, I had some very good side-saddle instruction years ago and did enjoy it - eventually, once I had grasped the basics and stopped trying to compare it to riding astride. I tried jumping a couple of times but didn't like it at all, just felt as if I was being left behind all the time. All you can do is fold forward from the hips and allow with the hands; you lose all the useful pivoting of knees and ankles. All these ladies who used to hunt side-saddle years ago were incredibly brave (and well-mounted) I reckon.

I had a lesson a couple of years ago liz and really enjoyed it but all the horses were muscled up totally wrong and Ive never really thought they looked as happy about it as they do ridden astride. Years ago I scoofed big time at a story about an animal communicator going to see a horse that was crabby to ride and deal with. Apparently the horse told her its offside was sore and had been for years and she 'got the feeling' the horse had been ridden side saddle. When its history was traced the horse had indeed been ridden in a side saddle for showing until it threw in the towel and said no more. I thought it was hilarious at the time........

Hi there, we're from all over, I'm in Essex the other ladies are Wiltshire and Leicestershire. I take on board your comments about ss jumoing, a lot of people do jump badly ss as they haven't been taught properly and try and ride exactly the same as they do over fences astride which is hideous for both horse and rider - I'd like to think my boy looks pretty relaxed and happy over his fences... I actually prefer jumping sideways, I interfere with my horse less, feel much more secure and he jumps far better. We've jumped up to 6' sidesaddle with no problem at all and he never has a sore back etc, even after a days drag hunting which can be up to 6 hours. I however can't walk the next day! It's much tougher on the rider than the horse! Attachments:
