Over winter, my guys will be living out again. They have their grazing supplemented with haylage (haven't got dry storage for hay and mare coughs).
Last year, they didn't touch the haylage unless the grass was snoww covered so I'm hoping that will be the case again this year.
What I am looking into though is ways to feed it - there is a very definite pecking order so I have always put it in more piles than horses but obviously there is quite a bit of wastage this way.
- I can't use nets or mangers on fencing, it has to be something to use in the middle of the field.
- Hay hutches seem to be quite small in diameter for the 6 horses they say the large one can be used for? Very concerned about injuries?
- Cattle ring feeders, prefer the tombstone type but costly andno lid to protect forage from weather. Are they big enough to prevent heirarchy being an issue?
- Double sided hay rack with manger underneath. Can make a lid for this quite easily. Big enough? Are these sturdy enough to be used in the field?
- Make something from pallets? What size would you reckon for 6 ranging from 11.2hh to 15.2hh? Or would I be better making multiple ones?
Any other suggestions or things I have missed?
