I was just starting to feel very confident with my mare, she is young and Ive been going out with a steady cob and she has taken on his confidence, then last saturday i was gettin her in from her very large field of mares and about half way up the field she started trotting around me then into me and every time i tried to get her to walk on she threw her head up and rushed at me,I managed a few steps forward then let her go,she had almost knocked me over. the next day she was fine coming in but spooky while being brushed, tacked up etc I rode out with a friend with another sensible horse, we met 2 scrambling motor bikes they turned their engines off while we rode well past them then when they started up she tried to take off every time I stopped her she would hear the engines and try and take off again, she has really shaken my confidence and am dreading riding her now. should i avoid riding her when she is in season? as she is so different.

I used to have a moody mare and I started her on Oestress and Magic from NAF. She started off with a good loading dose alongside the Magic and then dropped her Oestress down to a maintenance dose after 2 weeks. The Magic was also reduced right down to nominal amount and was just given when she was "fresh". It worked brilliantly for her but people kept saying I was wasting my money giving her these supplements. I know that it sometimes doesn't work but I really felt it made a huge difference in my mare's temperament. Good luck in finding a solution.

See my 'cautionary tale' thread on the horse help section for some possible advice. Also try Pax calming fluid - it can help with mares when they are being marish - also as said above try the various herbal supplements. Good luck.
